The Admiral Nelson - Braunston

The Nelson is on track to re open for Easter with a new Landlord. They are hoping to return the pub to its former glory and much work is being done at this moment. It is unfortunate for them that BW`s lock restrictions include a block on overnight mooring on the lock flight.

The area at the top and bottom of this flight like others could get to be even busier than usual.

Lets hope they bring back the 'belly buster' burger! :clapping:

On the other hand, the Eagle & Sun at Hanbury Junction (B=Worecester-Birmingham/Droitwich) has now closed and is in receivership. As of today The Vine at Kinver (Staffs & Worcs) remains shut up.

What a shame, just before "the season" gets underway. How long before The Vine becomes a prestigious waterside residential development?

Further diligent research required, but it may be that the previous tenants of the Nelson are the new guys at the Two Boats in Long Itchington.

Was at the 2 Boats last year, a fortnight before it shut. They told me they were leaving as it was £1300 a week lease and just couldn't afford it anymore. Nice to see it open again as we will be that way in a fortnight.

the problems with all these pubs is the greed of the pubco's they couldn't care less about the landlord and come september all the same places will shut yet again, then some other fool will part with their hard earned cash at the start of next season only to find out too late that they won't make a penny and will end up owing thousands

Exactly that. I have a chum works for a large 'pubco'.

He says most of the ones on their books haven't made money for years...but his 'pubco' doesn't care about that as there are always another set of mugs clutching life savings or redundancy money !

sad...

Rumour has it that one of the two partners who previously ran the Nelson now has the lease on his own; maybe the other one has moved on to the Two Boats?

Enterprise were asking for £615 rent per week, and the only tie was on draught beers. Reasonable I thought for such a potential 'honey pot' - assuming it rains at some point and the canal stays open!

I have to say I am genuinely distressed by the state of the pub industry. The pub has been a central plank in the community for generations and it is increasingly clear to me that they are a canary for the loss of community that is affecting so many areas of our ever more fragmented country.

Yes, the pub in our village has closed. I'm gutted :(

This is complex, and I put my hand up to say that I don't know anything about pub-management, so I don't want to say anything about that. There are plenty of people far better qualified than me to talk about that. What I can talk about is how I feel.

Once I might have been down the pub with OH in the evening, now I'm not, I'm on the Internet. Unless there is a banter to go to I am far more sociable now by staying at home, I can do a bit of work, while keeping in touch with far more friends than I used to meet in the pub.

I'm in contact with long lost cousins in Oz, a brother in the US, my mother, and many friends on CWDF. The friends I used to meet in the pub, scattered though they are through the UK and the rest of the world are still there, chatting, pointing out interesting articles, joking over something - much of it is via text, but I'm far more in contact with my oldest friends than I was 10 years ago.

I still like to go to the pub  , but for socialising, keeping in touch, chatting with old friends - the Internet is far better. Because of the Internet I am also far more likely to meet up with my friends, as just being in touch means that we are more likely to make an arrangement to meet up.

Am I distressed by the state of the pub industry? Yes. I do want the pubs to still be there when I want to meet up with friends for a drink or a meal, but, to be honest, so many pubs no longer cater for me. If I go out I want to be able to have a conversation, without a noisy sporting event being played out on a screen half the size of a wall behind me, or news 24/7 - neither of which are exclusive to city pubs. I don't like going into pubs when they need bouncers on the door - something that has come with the much lower cost of alcohol.

People go where they can socialise while feeling comfortable. While trying to attract young clientele, many of the pubs have forgotten that some older members of society like to go out for a drink too.

Our pub had no TV, it was a place for people in the village to meet and gossip while having a beer, or to go to for a meal. You could walk in there and know everyone in the place, and since there was only one pub in the village it catered to all ages. Sadly, the rent was too high because the owner was a developer who was trying to get Change of Use for 2 dwellings. He failed and kept the rent high so the life was gradually bled out of pub as a succession of Landlords lost money. The most recent hung on for 3 years because he was brewing his own beer which boosted his profits but in the end the place became quite shabby and more people started drinking on their own in front of the TV.

I'm probably the heaviest internet user you've ever met, but I still appreciate the local pub - it's the best way of meeting your own local community. Our village is so much poorer for the loss of it.

Thats an idea BSP. Perhaps we can start a CWDF pub boat. As it would be a ccer it might not need a licence and could open 24/7.

Just thought. It would have to be a pump out coz a cassette would need emptying every hour the way some of you lot drink

'Tie on draught beers' means the landlord can end up paying as much wholesale as free houses charge retail. It's all part of the process of milking hopeful newcomers dry before they fail and the brewery re-let the place for another half year.
