Alde service required

Is an Alde Comfort 2928? Or another model. What are the symptoms?

yes think so.

It will light and fire up but wont warm water up. It wont always work the heating either. Its desperate for a service. We ran out of gas and water this weekend, may be this has cocked it up? I am new to Aldes so arent too clever how they work. We also have a calorifier.

If it is the tall narrow one with a balanced flue (a cap and a 'skirt' on the flue terminator) it is a 2928. If it doesn't have a balanced flue, so just a cap on the terminator it is an earlier one. If it is a box shape then it is a 3010 (unless it is very old).

If it is lighting, and burning then the pilot should be ok (they are prone to getting clogged up).

Not heating the water: are you sure the header tank is full? And does the pump run (this sits in the header tank). If there is water in the header and the pump is running, if the burner is still going then you probably have an air lock somewhere in the system. However this is unlikely if it was running before you ran out of gas, unless you haven't got enough water in the header.

Running out of water shouldn't affect it (assuming you mean the fresh water, not the heating circuit water).

Running out of gas shouldn't be a problem if you can light the pilot. (I presume the pilot is lit as you say it fires up).

If the burner fires up, runs for a while, but then when it stops burning it won't relight because the pilot has gone out, then it is probably a faulty overheat stat.

You can take the burner unit out and send it to Alde for service/repair (if you are confident of doing it and know what you are doing - it does mean messing with the gas connection). They will turn it round in a few days.

It is a 2928. The header is about 1/2 inch above MIN. It will light and run for a minute then die down to pilot. Heating has been on for about an hour then it went off. When I leave the boat, as we arent live aboards, its usually left for about 2 weeks. I usually turn off the gas in the bow locker. The oven is before the Alde on the gas pipe run so we have to light a gas ring or 2 to draw the gas thru the pipe when we switch it back on after returning to it. It then lights straight away. We have no problem with the pilot.

Have you checked if the pump is running? You can unscrew it from the top of the header tank to check.

If you've disconnected the two wee spade terminal wires from the little circulation pumps motor in the header tank and re-connected them around the wrong way this will cause the pump motor to run in reverse causing a complete stoppage of circulation, an overheated boiler and shut down.

These Comfort 20 type boilers as you probably know draw in combustion air through a hole in the floor from the bilges which the boiler sits on,and its not unknown for spiders to keep crawling up it and blowing out the burners flames,a secondary sort of live fail safe device.Joking apart this air hole can get blocked with cobwebs and throttle the air supply. Looking through the little Mica window on the firebox are the flames when it is running a nice blue colour,if not and burning yellowish with a bit of black smoke issuing from the exhaust, means un fully burn't fuel---burner needs cleaning and or cobwebby air intake needs clearing.

getting blue flames but the boat was riddled with spiders when we bought it back in late Sept, but we had no probs then.

The 2928 is a balanced flue and doesn't draw air in at the bottom - the older 2920 did I think.

If the water is circulating properly, it sounds like a problem with the 'stat.

Yes the older 20 model and the havoc spiders could cause.I have no knowledge of the later 2928.

the room stat was changed on the last service 16 months ago. Someone has said it may be the pump.

  • 2 weeks later...

That's who we use. He's very good. Graham found a cremated spiders nest inside the burner when it stopped working last year.

He serviced ours last year. Lovely guy; really knows his stuff. (We're at Mercia, T&M)
