MartinClark
Doesn't look to be next to any water ... could it be a footpath tunnel underneath a canal - Stonework looks a bit like L&L perhaps, though I don't know where... or possibly a bit of the Bradford Canal close to shipley Junction... 'Under' is good. L&L and Bradford less so. It's gone a bit quiet today. Is it time for a photo of the other end yet? It will probably give the game away for some of you. MartinClark
Okay. Here's the photo of the other end. Yes, it is bent. Yes, it goes under a canal. I'm sure some of you will be able to guess it correctly now! I'm sure some of you will also be able to identify the boat! Albion
Congratulations, Roger. It is indeed the Jubilee on its IWA UK Tour in, I think, 2006. Now, about this tunnel... With your specialism in mind, those hills in the background do look rather Pennine-like. So are we looking for a tunnel that goes under (at 90 degs to) a Pennine canal and then turns 90 degs at the end to come up parallel with the tow-path? Roger Edited to add that unfortunately I have been unable to find any details of Jubilee's route during its 2006 all over the system cruise so I can't narrow the options down at all Edited January 1, 2012 by Albion

Sorry, wrong. It looks like a tunnel to me. Did I get it? You certainly did! An extra banana to that man! Perhaps you would like both images together to save scrolling and backpaging (is that a word?).... P.S. "34" might not help much.
Albion
Right in every respect! Now I'm going to struggle because I have never done such Pennine routes as the Rochdale and Huddersfield, and it doesn't look like the L&L to me, so I reckon it's now over to others who have done those routes......unless I've got it completely wrong of course, which is quite likely Roger
alan_fincher
P.S. "34" might not help much. You are correct...... But the possible red herring did at least cause me to waste several hours last evening, thereby avoiding New Year's Eve TV. I think I'll leave this one to the Northern canal experts! It must be the Huddersfield narrow, judging by the hills. Can't recognise it as the Rochdale. Possibly the Upper Peak Forest, but since I rarely get off my boat except to go to the pub I don't see these bits that are out of sight.

Rod a mod from Tod
As toast. Would that be freshly made toast. If so perhaps somewhere on the Diggle Flight, but not to sure where. Not that familiar with the canal around there. Edit. Just had a look on Google Earth and I'm going for the top pound before the tunnel. Darren72
Guillotine lock on the Calder(Salter) + Hebble between Elland and Copley!! are the other photos which have been added, but no idea of the tunnel in question. MartinClark
just after lock 30w? Correct, Mike. In fact it is halfway between Lock 30w and Ward Lane bridge. I am in the middle of revising my "virtual cruise" along the HNC to include better photos and photos of this tunnel will be included, so that you will all be able to get a better idea of where it is in relation to the rest of the canal. The tunnel is a bit of a puzzle. It was clearly built the right shape for a boathorse in harness to walk through, making me wonder whether it led to stables, especially as it leads down from the side of the towpath. On the other hand there is a footpath which continues in the same general direction across a footbridge over the railway. The company may have been required to provide a tunnel or bridge to this route remained open. But that in irself is strange as it is not that far from Ward Lane bridge and the footpath mentioned above eventually joined onto Ward Lane, so why bother? Anyway, it is a nice little feature and in good condition and worth looking for if you are ever passing. P.S. It is marked on Nicholson's as 'Subway'.
