PinkWaterFairy
Reverse it. If you have a wife dogsbody/partner you can get them to walk along the towpath holding on to the bow rope to help keep it straight and shout at them when they do it wrong ('dragging the bucket thing' didn't seem to make any difference)
WotEver
.. walk along the towpath holding on to the bow rope to help keep it straight... How do you push with a rope then?
luctor et emergo
You need to attain a minimum speed for a bucket to be effective... (Did somebody mention moored boats, and Oxford Canal?) good luck. Let us know the proposed date, we could make it the banter entertainment. billS
Whats going on here - 28 posts and no one has mentioned how useful a bow thruster would be in these circumstances? Is the pro bow thruster lobby so thoroughly cowed by the abuse? OK - here goes. Single handed reversing for a mile - a clear case where a bow thruster would be just the job! Bob18
Not cowed, we are just enjoying the baiting of one less fortunate. And yes a properly used bow thruster would make it a lot easier, but would spoil the fun for the rest of us (until the thruster overheated and stopped....) Only if it remains "eel free" apparently, though.......
Bones
The bow thruster was mentioned ages ago - someone on the front with a pole... and single handed you just don't have the person on the stern... Bob18
No, that's a bow THRUTCHER, not a bow thruster (where are the "whistle" or "stick tongue in cheek emoticon when you need them?)
carlt
How do you push with a rope then? You have an assistant walking along the towpath with a rope and a 14' pole, resting on the gunwale. The rope keeps the bow from drifting out and the pole stops it drifting in. carlt
Bit tricky if there is a line of moored boats along the towpath. At which point the assistant gets on the boat and fends off, where necessary, shouting profuse apologies.

nigel carton
Ok completely ignore this topic, the owner turned the boat around ready for the trip. Just spoken to the new owner who I'm delivering the boat for and he's just informed me, the chap he has bought the boat off, turned it around with his Grandson. So pointy end is pointing in the right direction!

AJLintern
Well when you get to the winding hole, turn it around so it's pointing the wrong way and reverse to the next one
