  1. The first bridge north of Duke's lock has already been converted to this mechanism, with the winding mechanism on the towpath side. When we used it last month, it only lifted by a foot however quickly or slowly we turned the handle. We only got it to rise by helping it by a second person pushing it up manually at the same time. At least 3 of the bridges are normally open to boats. I suspect this change means they will normally be closed. Bummer.

  4. We moved the boat from Stockton top lock to Banbury over the weekend. We were surprised to note some long overdue improvements on the stretch. Of the 24 locks, only one paddle was out of action at Claydon bottom lock. The most surprising thing was the amount of encroaching towpath side and offside vegetation which had been removed. Fenny Compton (ex) tunnel was a revelation, and it is now possible to pass boats along the entire straight apart from the small narrow bit at the Claydon end. The towpath also had seen a lot of remedial work and was in a much better state. All ready for the summer drought!

  15. Party pack of Helium balloons - or an obliging hot air balloonist. Much cheaper than a Chinook.

  20. All true but perhaps not relevant in that your boat was fast pleasure cruiser and clearly not suitable as long time liveaboard home. The narrowboat market is driven by crusty old people with money to spend, who in most cases, would not consider that type of boat. ("no no Gerald, I know you like it, but there is no way I am sleeping in that weird bed under the seat, and anyway it goes far too fast. You said our new boat would be like a country cottage that moved") and people who want cheap housing.
