Brilliant! ISTR the same happening in Nottingham a few years ago ('97)? at the working boat rally there with my dad's tug Wyrd versus a number of boats, including Joel if memory serves me. needless to say we didn't win that one!!!!

Judging by the prop-wash being thrown up it does look like the tug put up a decent fight!

The tug (think it's named "Ilda" ?) is a beast and certainly didn't disgrace itself, add five ex-working boats abreast all digging-in .... et voila, one perfectly dredged channel !

Ilda is a Bantam push tug, with a 4 cylinder Cummins diesel rated at about 70hp and the interesting and noticeable thing with this boat is it has a 4 blade prop. It really digs in. The acceleration from standstill is more like being in a car than a boat. its impressive. The multi boat tug of war was repeated today and Ilda lost again but it wasn't a pushover - with 4 narrow boats pulling.

4ft draught and a 32 inch diameter '4 leaf clover' its a serious boat.

Light rain showers, today's forecast said..........

Light, indeed !!!

We still enjoyed a visit today, but the car may smell of (very!) wet dog for quite a while.

Suddenly the beer tent that had been near empty earlier became the most popular place on site, but we enjoyed a pint with Julie (water Rat) and Barry (Higgs).

Briefly ran into Magnetman, Baldock & Strads, but otherwise seemed to miss most other forum members, even if several of their boats were spotted.

Plenty of exhaust in the tuf of war..... (At least it stopped them singing, briefly!)

Anybody need to leave in a hurry ?

many thanks for videoing the "pull" against Ilda.. with Roger Allsop at the controls....

It was a great warm sunny afternoon on staurday.. we and I'm sure the others (mike P, dave, paul, adrian and ben also enjoyed the crack..

Mrs strads and myself on Lincoln were the "middle boat - Lincoln" on the saturday

Sunday was equally as much fun, and the more "normal" weather returned late afternoon....but sort of added to the end..

Overall a great weekend.. thanks to the organisers for the weekend and to Chris and Adrian for the commentary.

one poor note the boaters bar ran out real ale by early saturday night....... not perhaps a real supprise!!!!

Good effort for a local charity ... did anyone see them?

Phoenix Morris perform at Rickmansworth Waterways Festival

1:09pm Tuesday 18th May 2010 Watford Observer

A local group of morris dancers performed for crowds at the Rickmansworth Waterways Festival this weekend.

Phoenix Morris, from Rickmansworth, danced on both Saturday and Sunday, alongside the Grand Union Canal at Batchworth Lock, and amongst the crowds in the main festival arena in the Aquadrome.

Foreman Sue Stimpson, who teaches the group how to dance, said: “We always enjoy performing at the Waterways Festival and we get a great audience.

“The black waistcoats and red scarves we wear are based on the traditional outfits of canal workers, so we fit in well.”

The dancers also presented £400 to Swan Care, a charity which cares for swans on the Aquadrome and canal.

Phoenix Morris practise every Wednesday at 8.30 at the Scout Hall in Ebury Road, Rickmansworth.

Best of three success! As my father in law pointed out, I had added some much needed ballast.

Many thanks to our esteemed and entirely unbiased commentator Baldock! (Hope you liked the cakes!!)
