Just wondered if anyone knows anything behind the scenes about the future of the Barbridge pub? I saw it last week and it looked as though it was having work done to the inside - was all go with trucks and workmen on site.

That sounds promising1 Are the long stay boats still moored on the pub moorings?

They were told to move when the pub closed.

But did they? I know that the previous (?) owner told them to move a few times but they just came back 🙂 . Doesn't really matter now though as there is no reason to stop there 😞

No ledge on the mooring outside the pub. The road noise doesn't bother me. I just remove my hearing aids 😃

Latest is that Punch Taverns have the pub and are applying for different trading hours.

The pub and bar operator wants to open the venue and provide late night refreshment 9am to 1am, (Sunday to Wednesday) and 9am to 2am, (Thursday to Saturday).

It wants to provide the sale of alcohol up until one hour before closing and the provision of live and recorded music until 11pm (Sunday to Wednesday) and 1pm (Thursday to Sunday).

I don't think that pub needs those long hours. It's in a small road with houses next door and opposite. I'm all for a pub trading but hang on a mo.

It used be a regular spot for Reasheath college students, maybe they are looking to that to provide custom

Good to hear it is reopening ! Hope they keep the moorings along side the pub for visitors and not let long stayers take up residence there.

Good news indeed, just slightly unfortunate that it will probably not quite be open in time for Easter as we will be passing on the way back from Ellesmere Port and that would have been a good option for a stop.

The Shady Oak by bridge 109 is open again and better than I ever remember it - food and beer.

We stopped there on the way back from Ellesmere Port last Easter and it was excellent. Looking at options for this year's trip and it would be handy to get a bit further south, but if there are no better options then so be it!

Tollemache arms is generic food pub 10 minute walk along the road from top of Bunbury locks. Best moorings further along towards the next bridge though. Robinsons beers.

Thanks, that could be very handy as it's likely to be around where we get to. Need to get to the top of Adderley the next day so looking to take as big a bite out of the trip the day before as possible.

The Barbridge Inn has now reopened under new management.

The Olde Barbridge Inn

So if you are in the area please pop in for drink or food so that their effort to take on the place was the right thing to do.

Good news ! Are the moorings outside the pub for use of visitors or long term moorers ? When we came past a few weeks ago the towpath under the bridge was blocked off and if you moored there you couldn't get to the pub.

We went last night on the way back from Ellesmere Port.

The towpath is still fenced off under the bridge but the bridge is accessible if you moor just to the Nantwich side on pins (or there is one bit of Armco).

Pub was fine but ran out of food by 7pm for walk-ins so best to book. On the plus side, Deliveroo from Crewe or Nantwich gave a lot of choices and they were happy for us to sit in the garden to eat it.

I would guess food will become more settled once they have got to grips with things.

Final point - the lady behind the bar used to work for Four Counties Fuels and lives aboard, so it is definitely boater friendly.

Will be great to have it open again, particularly if they can clear the constant-moorers from mooring outside and actually pick up the passing trade over the season and boater-regulars over the winter. We’ll pass by later in the week so will stop and report back if there is a space.

Is £5.50 a pint now the standard price to pay?

Forgive my cynicism, but waterside pubs tend to inflate prices for beer and food, due to their location, which sort of puts me off.

I've been hanging around Ellesmere on the Llan Canal for a while now and love going to The White Hart Inn. It's a small local pub in a side street in the town and about 3 minutes from the canal arm. Lots of beers on tap and you get two pints and a packet of crisps for £7.20 - varies to which you buy but not too different in price. Prices in general are going up due to businesses having to pay higher wages and taxes.

As for canal side pubs - they do ask a premium for their product so I try not to go to them.
