Is there a company that will take my engine out of my narrowboat, rebuild / recondition it and then put it back in?

I am based near Cambridge

Thanks

Key diesels might, but they do not have a strong reputation on here.

Have a look at the website for the Federation of Engine Remanufacturers.  That lists firms that to overhaul work, by region and capability.

If it is a marinised modern plant motor  depending on the base engine ( for example a Mitsubishi or a Kubota) talk to your local plant companies, and see how they get their engines overhauled.

If if is sort of, or actually, vintage then talk to Primrose Engineering or maybe learn to DIY.

A BMC, 1500 or 1800, talk to Calcutt Boats.

Some engines are just not worth the effort- most of the Chinese ones, frinstance.

So, for more accurate advice, please tell us what the current engine is.

Any boatyard with engineering capabilities should be able to lift the engine out and reinstall it. If it requires major work they would send it to a specialist company for reconditioning.

How many hours has it done and what's wrong with it? Why do you think it needs a complete rebuild?

If the problem has been properly diagnosed and it's something like bottom end bearings so the engine needs to come out because there's no access then fair enough, but if it's the top end, cylinder head, etc, then it's going to be much cheaper and easier to fix it in situ.

Hi Gary,

See you on Facebook- did you have any joy with that one (eg is it better than you thought it may be ?)

Fingers crossed..
