Water pump suddenly loud after a refill

Hey all,

 

Sorry if this has been posted and answered somewhere already though I couldn't find any posts that mirror my scenario.

 

I'll keep it short and sweet.

 

Water ran out mid shower (was literally getting ready to go fill up anyway so not a big deal) so I switched off the water pump to prevent it sucking in any gunk or enamel or anything. Went about the cruise as normal and filled up normally.

 

Since filling up though the pump seems pretty loud and generally sounds unhappy when taps are running or the shower is on. There's no spluttering and water pressure and flow seem otherwise fine. Just curious why it could be suddenly much louder?

From the shower head spluttering and the flow stopping, the pump was only active for 10 seconds or so while I grabbed a towel and shut it off. This has happened before only once, as I'm usually filling up before I run the water dry, and there was no increase in sound after filling up that time.

 

It's not an old pump, has only been fitted for about 10 months and has otherwise had no issues at all.

Do you have a strainer on the pump input and have you checked it for clogging with muck sucked from the tank?

Funny that, just come back to the boat after a month and ours is noisy, sounds like it does when sucking air in the suction, but no air. I will live with it.

It seems to have quietened down. Might well have just been vibration... As long as it remains un-blown up, i'll live with it...

I fitted a new pump. The old one had a leak. When I turned on the tap it sounded funny withe intermittent running. . I then turned the shower on to bleed the shower and it is now ok. I reckon the air in the Shower pipe was interfering with the pressure switch so suggest you make sure all the air is out of all the pipes. IE turn on all the taps!

Back last winter I forgot to turn off my Surflow water pump. I did turn off the water isolater valve.

When I returned a few months later I could hear the pump running and thought, that will need a new pump. However it's been working fine, so running dry doesn't seem to be a problem.

Running for a few months will probably have worn the brushes down quite a lot.

Just before bed last year my pump started running and I could hear running water from the pointy end of the boat.

Dived into the 2ft high storage under the front (behind the water tank) to find the strainer lid had split and was pouring water into the boat.

Tank holds 500ltrs, You've never seen someone wiggle under a sheet of steel so fast to turn off the tank supply in all your life (it's right against the tank in the far corner).

Think I had a touch of back pressure from the old pump that caused it.

 

Why oh why do we design such setups? 😆

So you're not even going to bother to check for crap in the strainer as suggested by Tony?

Its not what 'we' design, its down to the fact that the boat designers are rarely boat owners/users.

You'll find that hire boats are far better designed for maintanance than 'leisure' boats, as input into the build is given by those who actualy have to maintain them and get a fast turnaround to get it back into service.

I put my main stop valve easy to get to under the front steps, well it was when I was 50 and fitted it, at 76 things are a bit more difficult
