Wey & Arun Canal Old Restoration Photos.

Featured Posts

Found a load of my photos from when I was active on the Wey & Arun canal restoration years ago.

Malham Lock.

Some of the top coping stones are concrete that we made to look like sandstone, our civil engineer was very fussy about his concrete.

Person in the lock is Bill Tompson who went on to work on certain national waterway magazines.

Rowner Lock Filling For The First Time.

The paddle gear on the left hand gate is what I retrieved from the bottom of Malham lock and took home to restore to working condition.

I've always had a soft spot for the Wey and Arun. Along with the Basingstoke and Southern Grand Union, it was one of my local canals before I moved to my present house.

Peter Beresford and Peter Foulger were co-owners in our first shareboat back in the early 90's.

I'd love to learn more about the Wey & Arun.

Growing up in Sussex it was the closest canal to me but I didn't even know canals existed back then. Now I have the interest in canals It's probably the furthest canal from me. Typical.

All my photos are from the late 70's to the mid 80's I joined the trust in 1977

You'll be new then.  The Wey & Arun Canal Society preceded the trust being formed

These gates where ex grand union bought very cheap from BWB, I believe they came from the Watford flight and we rebuilt them in Peter Longley garden shed.

Taloking to WACT bods at the weekend it would appear that Lock 17 is no longer required in the long term resrtoration, oh well, never mind, many happy memories from there.
