  1. How do you know the pump that takes water out isn’t working if the pump bringing water in doesn’t work? Is there any water in the tank?

  3. When was this? On the 12th August this year I hit something under bridge 20, I didn’t get stuck but the boat lifted a fair bit, I moored up near the blue bell pub and walked back down to the bridge and waited to watch a couple more boats come through and both boats never hit a thing, so I never reported it as I thought it was just me and I had obviously moved the obstruction out of the way.
  4. Only if the sections have pole bungs in them otherwise they sink and submarine so they don’t sink in the place they are dropped
  5. Hopefully none of the pounds will be empty as they were for us at the end of August. We did the flight from the top down and a previous boat had left the anti vandal locks open so somebody (it could’ve been the boat crew) had opened/not closed the paddles on the lower gates and the first seven pounds were dry, (the top gates were very leaky). I called crt out as an environmental emergency due to all the fish flapping in the mud. We moored at the top the night before, no issues apart from the traffic noise as it’s right under the ring road.
  6. 3 pumps and a water rescue unit is normal pda to a water based incident, 1 pump with water rescue trained staff to back up the specialist unit and two other pumps as manpower. The first pump in attendance will not necessarily be water rescue trained but the incident may be in their station area. If not needed they can always be returned or re routed but if requested later maybe too late if the incident is a life threatening incident.
  7. Facilities ate open. its an awkward lock and I was scared of breaking my key so didn't want to force it, so user error. ??
  8. The office is closed, as are the facilities? I’ve just called crt to ask why and the lady on the phone is going to get back to me. There’s 3 locks on the door, one being bw key, which works but the other 2 locks are, err locked ? Talking to a chap moored nearby he says they were open yesterday. Bin store is ok, it’s just the elsan toilets and shower.
  9. Just arrived at Cambrian wharf, 4 other boats moored here on the pontoons and one bank side just out of shot on the photo above. Birmingham is very quiet not many boats or people tbh but it is raining. My first time here and I’m pleased to be moored in the centre.
  10. I’m hoping to moor there today, I’ll let you know how I get on.
  11. Saw this on the towpath today whilst out walking. It was about an inch long and as fat as your little finger. Any ideas? Saw a Terrapin as well yesterday.
  12. I had an e mail from crt last week asking me to complete a survey on the state of the canals. Is this a regular thing?

  15. Flood the pound and float it in? ?
  16. Coleman camp oven, there’s one on eBay atm.
  17. I have just done the Coventry and Ashby in the last 3 weeks and today come up from Coventry basin and I’m heading south on the Oxford. Coventry basin was very quiet only 2 other boats, no dog mess but plenty of goose poo. Coventry itself is nothing to shout about there is a lot of re furbishment works going on in the city. The canal between Hawkesbury and the centre is filthy, we saw prams road signs shopping trollies. Between Fradley and the Ashby it was quite pleasant in places, we moored up in Atherstone for the night and had no issues. Decent fish and chips from the fish inn, medium is big enough for two?. We didn’t stop in Nuneaton it didn’t look very inviting. The Ashby was lovely.
  18. Will they post to a post office using the local collect scheme? If they will then find a post office on your route. https://www.postoffice.co.uk/mail/local-collect
  19. A bit bonkers that any self respecting vandal can buy one off amazon for a mere £3.39 ?
  20. Having recently bought a boat from a broker here are my views fwiw. I bought from a broker, Great Haywood, I found them efficient and helpful. New and used I thought the boats they were selling were overpriced, they were helpful though and allowed us to look around with no pressure of following you they just handed the keys over. I also went to view some that were for sale on boat finder brokerage who had some nice boats that sold quickly so obviously well priced. Rugby boats had some good ones but I never got chance to view as they sold as quickly as they went on. Some brokers never bothered to reply to my phone calls or e mails enquiring about viewing so I stopped looking at boats they were selling. I think I ‘dropped on’ with our boat as it came with a very nice private mooring on the Shropshire Union. I trawled Apollo duck for weeks. Narrowboats are selling quickly atm and imo it is very much a sellers market, so you have to be cautious but also act quickly if you find the right boat. Good luck and I hope you find your ‘Shangri La’.
