I retire in 2 years and will be looking to buy my first narrowboat. Hopefully (for me) many of the newbie owners that rushed out this year to buy a boat will have come to realise what owning and maintaining a boat costs in time and money and the novelty will have worn off making them consider selling, creating a buyer's market. I hope......

......but at least everybody will have a place to park their (electric) bike.....

Thanks for all the replies folks. Some interesting and very informative posts. I guess I've been thinking too much.? I was wondering about when CCing, say every other day for 2 or 3 hours then the batteries will get most of the bulk charge in from the engine, then relying on solar to fill the last, say 10-20% durimg the rest of the day. My question was on grey days would the batteries really get to 100% SOC bearing in mind still using inverter, fridge etc while there is relatively low solar power coming in. I thought isolating the one battery would at least ensure each battery got to 100% at least once, twice or maybe three times a month(depending on routine). Like I said maybe I'm overthinking a problem that doesn't exist.

Not trying to invent the wheel but..... Say, you have a domestic battery bank of 3 batteries - which is big enough for your electrical needs, would it be worth installing 4 and isolating 1 battery in turn out of the bank every 7 days to be fully charged for a week on it's own smaller solar panel? This would ensure each battery of the bank would get 100% fully charged for a few days every month. There must be times when normal battery banks don't actually get a regular 100% charge, say, when CCing. Does this make sense and do you think it would increase lead-acid battery lifetime by the 25+% needed to make it financially viable? Or am I just thinking too much again?

Or wait for the solar to charge the batteries????

If you're sure it's an air leak, I've located vacuum leaks with a tin of shaving foam before.

....and be careful walking inside the boat if you have a metal plate in your head with magnets on the roof......

A word of warning..... A get tuit is different than a round tuit. Normally you need a round tuit to do the get tuit. I think you will need 2 round tuits.

Ask the seller to provide some sort of paper trail ie receipts for servicing, repairs, spare parts etc - as much paperwork as possible via "the friend" When viewing the boat scrutinise any paperwork you come across ie names, addresses, phone number, email address etc. See if these tally with the seller. Make sure "the friend" has all original keys for every lock on the boat. On the day of the viewing, post a pic of the boat on here, maybe a member here knows the boat and or owner (small chance) Re starter battery, take a set of jump leads along in case the battery doesn't fit or cables don't reach.
