  1. Did you get any hydrometer reading? Bod
  2. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  3. What work have you done on the boat, before moving on? Bod
  4. Can a gas fridge, be fitted on a new build/refit?(if it never had one in the first place) BSS and all that. Gas-safe fitter needed? Bod
  5. As advised by Tony, BSS by an independant examiner, as part of the acceptance process. Bod I believe our boat wasn't, going by the receipts the 2nd owner had to pay.(Mushrooms moved, [too close to boiler], battery secured properly, not small items.)
  6. Glad to see that your not novices, so you will be aware that the Boat Safety Scheme, and RCD requirements, are different to normal house building techniques. Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but so many first timers get badly unstuck. My main advice. Remember that when you install any bit of equipment, you may well be the person who has to service/replace it! Bod
  7. What do you do with the bucket of "solids"? Are you liveaboard, or leisure user? Bod
  8. Welford arm? Braunston tunnel, Norton junction, Watford locks, Crick tunnel, Welford arm.(pub at end) Collect/drop off Crick, Yelvertoft, or Norton junction(Long Buckby) Everything bar campsites. Bod
  9. Don't forget the RCD regulations. Can cause major problems, should you want/have to sell. Bod
  10. No. But how do you get grass stains out? Bod
  11. How quickly, and by what method do your batteries charge up? If they charge up quickly, and discharge quickly, they have reduced capacity. Check battery water levels, and hydrometer readings, if poss. Bod
  12. Unless you are given the wood by its lawful owner, then it is not free. All land in this country is owned, by someone, therefore all trees are owned. Without the specific permission of the land owner, you cannot collect even dead fallen wood. This could be seen as theft, or damage. Some wood land is managed for wildlife, and as such is left natural, dead/dieing all left where it falls, make habitate for insects and small invertabrates. What you could do in parts of the world not covered by English law may well be different. Bod
  13. Your new mooring, is it salt water, or fresh water? You may need to fit different anodes, for salt water. This would be the easiest time to do that. Bod
  14. Does the strip fit in the cylinder slot? Bod
  15. I was told that the great rush of unburnt fuel/air mix entering the cylinder, would at best dilute the oil layer on the cylinder wall, or wash it off completly. By then stopping the engine, a new layer would not be spread around. Admitley this was more for petrol engines, I would expect a diesel not to be as bad, due to injectors, rather than carberettors. Having suffered for years a neighbour who reved to the red line, then switch off, before the revs fell, I did ask questions. (Basic answer, was I lived next to a prat) Bod
  16. Cool or cold? Can you make ice cubes? Check the ventilation around the fridge, the back (fins area) may not be cool enough, for heat transfer. Bod
  17. I believe the point of "warming up" an engine is to allow the oil to get where it should be, in the quantities it should have, to prevent excessive, premature wear. Reving up before switching off, washes the oil from the cylinder bores, allowing the rings to contact(and wear) the bore. Bod
  18. Bizzards advice is often classed as entertainment, read some of his "wheezes". However he does know what he is talking about, and is very reliable in his information. Not all boats are built to the same standard, or style, as ones you have seen. Some have wooden hand rails, and relying on them for safety, might not be wise! Many modern boats do not have rails as such, but rather a solid lip, which cannot be clipped to. Bod
  19. Off Topic Sorry Richard please PM me with details of sheets, we need some. Bod
  20. Might be an opportunity, with your background, in paint work tidying, on boats for sale. I know you wanted out from the paint, but this would be only small touch up/good polish work. If you were prepared to travel, there are large quantities of boats crying out for this in the midlands. (thinking of one not far from Long Buckby) Anybody considers "I can wash my boat". When it comes to large areas of dull paint work, the attitude changes to "thats bl***ly hard work" Bod
