  1. No, that’s gas detectors which alarm to any alkane gas including the methane in your (or your dog’s) farts.
  2. Don’t know about your marina, but in ours the curtain twitching would be to see if you needed any help. But then we do have a first aid/first responder team here covering 24/7 and carrying an emergency phone which is texted by ambulance control whenever an ambulance or paramedic is tasked to the marina. Since I became ill, we’ve been overwhelmed with offers of support, lifts to and from hospital/GP surgery/pharmacy/shops/whatever. Anyway, glad it’s all’s well that ends well for you.
  3. Ta muchly. Only thing is, it’s now in both fora...
  4. They’re rolling these out at Mercia, though without the helpful label reminding you how to use it. Makes life much easier for us residentials when we boat shuffle every six months, before we had to settle up the difference in balances every time. Only slight downside is that the meter displays the credit as kWh rather than money. The next thing we’ve got to look forward to is fibre broadband to the bollards and lodges. I kid you not, should be in by Xmas.
  5. Tony doesn’t say he did, so I’ve reported the OP and suggested moving it to BB & M.

  7. If it comes to insults, I happened across a genuine Anglo-Saxon one the other week: “arserope”. Haven’t had a chance to use it yet though, as haven’t been able to boat this year.
  8. Is that right? I thought that on a river, the vessel going downstream is normally the stand on vessel as it has less scope for manoeuvring. That’s in no way to try to exonerate Steve Haywood as he had the full width of the river to use and deliberately steered into the other craft, a clear failure to take ”proper and effective action to avoid collision”.
  9. Met my Macmillan nurse for the first time yesterday. She produced this handy chart for discussing this topic: https://www.continence.org.au/pages/bristol-stool-chart.html
  10. In our family, we call that a CON, Clinically Obese Narrowboat.
  11. So why is he being such a Richard Edward trying to force open flood gates being held shut by the head of water above them?
  12. It still closed over a month ago and shows a big majority for excluding the Politics sub-forum from the VNC, which has not yet happened. OTOH, it’s no big deal to just not open the relevant threads and I guess @RichM has more important stuff to do.
  13. Calibra do an interesting FOB aluminium anchor which dismantles to pack into a padded bag. They also supply lead weighted rope, easier to handle than chain and kinder to the paint on your gunwales when you recover it. Claimed to be good for up to 10 tonnes displacement. Website: https://www.calibramarine.com/anchors/fob-anchors/foblight/ No connection with the company, just saw one at the Braidbar Weekend earlier this month.
  14. Coal tits, on the other hand...
  15. I don’t know how true it was, but when we first started living aboard in ‘04, we were told never to store coal bags directly on the roof as acids can leach out of the coal and damage the paint. We took to wrapping the bags in a tarp, but it doesn’t avoid the trapped moisture problem. The other solution is to make a dais for them out of inverted bread crates.
  16. Boat fitters have three modes of operation: 1) Sales mode, ends when the customer signs the contract 2) Design mode, ends when the customer takes the boat out on the shake down cruise 3) Excuse mode, ends at the end of the warranty period.
  17. In addition, there’s quite a large group I think of as “bourgeois anarchists” who genuinely believe that the rules were made to keep the little people in order but don’t apply to them. They really think that if the world isn’t the way they’d like it to be, it should be changed so that it is.
  18. Hence the window tomorrow morning to work through the flight.
  19. Just in: The repair to the culvert has been more difficult than anticipated. Our engineers and contractors are continuing discussions to organise the best method for a successful repair. Whilst these discussions are ongoing, navigation will remain closed. A further update will be provided by 5pm today.

  21. Humph. Serves you right for plaguing everyone else on the cut with your choice of “music” whilst shouting at Alexa. Hope RCR get you going again quickly ?
  22. I can only report the experience of the owner of Felonious Mongoose, the first hybrid built by Braidbar. Using a big bank of Trojans, he reckoned to get one day’s electric cruising for every day of diesel. What he didn’t measure was how much extra diesel the engine burnt on the diesel days compared to a conventional drive. He also took every opportunity to recharge overnight in marinas.
  23. You could always use your dad’s address and offer to pay the difference in CT bills if necessary. It depends on the LA. We used our daughter’s address in Burton for some years, she told the council office but they let her still have her single occupancy discount.
