Keeping Up Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 I have just received the following by email: "Could you keep an eye out for a stolen boat? It's a Louis & Joshua 60' trad with an upstand in front but no cover. It has all portholes, is navy blue on the gunnels and has a green centre panel. The hull is I think a Jonathon Wilson, the boat's name is Truculent and it had Louis & Joshua No 48 on it. It was stolen from Sawley Marina they think early hours of Monday, and though it's thought to have headed for the T & M no-one really knows where it was going." We've got a good record of success at finding stolen boats. Can we do it again this time? Sorry I don't know any other details, I'm just the messenger here, but I've asked if there's a photo available - I'll post it here if I get one.
Liam Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 I'm on the Bridgewater so I shall keep my eye out if it passes along the T&M through the tunnel. Pictures would be good, along with a note of any distinguishable features - not just the paint scheme as we know how easily this can be changed going back to the Holly saga.
Chris J W Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 Miles away on the LLangollen at the moment, but will keep an eye out Just In Case.
FadeToScarlet Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 http://www.boatsandoutboards.com/php/brows...&Submit.y=9 Here's the boat on Boatsandoutboards; there's one picture. TRUCULENT Built by LOUIS & JOSHUA BOATBUILDERS - Length: 60 feet (18.29 metres) Beam: 6 feet 10 inches (2.09 metres).Metal hull power of 43BHP. Registered with BW number 510205 as a Powered.
FadeToScarlet Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 Advert here has more photos Ooh, it's next to that widebeam that featured in one of the magazines a while back. *Off topic* I wonder what the attitude of the Police etc. is to this? If it were a £64k car gone missing I'm sure they would be co-operative.
carlt Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 I wonder what the attitude of the Police etc. is to this? If it were a £64k car gone missing I'm sure they would be co-operative. No, they'd say "It's already been stripped for parts, by now, or on a boat to Russia. Here's your incident number, for the insurance."
sueb Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 No, they'd say "It's already been stripped for parts, by now, or on a boat to Russia. Here's your incident number, for the insurance." Or as a copper said to me once 'We could never find anything on the canals, we wouldn't know where to look' Sue
Liam Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 Well, the exterior of the boat has been noted, even though there's only one pic of the outside... I am definitely down at the moorings this weekend and may even cruise southwards towards the T&M so I will keep my eye out, and also let people know about the boat.
alan_fincher Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 Or as a copper said to me once 'We could never find anything on the canals, we wouldn't know where to look'Sue Don't panic.... They are on the case....
Liam Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 I've known four boats be nicked since I started boating... 3 of which have been private boats. One was the hire boat, Holly, the first one was nicked off our moorings on the Bridgewater, but the other 2 were boats which had been advertised for sale. I wonder, is this something we're going to see more of?
saltysplash Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 The double fenders on the Bow is quite an ID feature, that coupled with a very hasty crap paint job may assist in a spot
WJM Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 "I wonder what the attitude of the Police etc. is to this? If it were a £64k car gone missing I'm sure they would be co-operative." I had a £64k car go missing once - Police told me it was a civil matter, nothing to do with them!
Tiger Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 Don't panic.... They are on the case.... Is this the 'Fast Response Unit'? Tiger.
GSer Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 "I wonder what the attitude of the Police etc. is to this? If it were a £64k car gone missing I'm sure they would be co-operative." I had a £64k car go missing once - Police told me it was a civil matter, nothing to do with them! They would be more likely to get involved quickly if the boat was a 'Home' for somebody or indeed if the boat was the property of the Chief Constable or similar. If it's just somebodys property going missing they are unlikely to give it any priority. They are busy busy people A few years back I had a bad few years with crime and eventually i worked it out to unresolved losses totalling £35,000 over five years. The final straw was when the missus was robbed in her shop by two young lads, CCTV evidence was aquired, turned out that the old bill had been following the lads around town but had lost them just before the robbery, the lads were caught later on, but released with no charge. I was well miffed and when I had the chance I contacted the PC who had been our point of contact, during the chat he informed me that in his opinion I was oversensitive to crime in our area and was overreacting, that went down well, unlike my blood pressure Sorry for the hijack
dacaB Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 The double fenders on the Bow is quite an ID feature, that coupled with a very hasty crap paint job may assist in a spot The side fenders look like hoops.............anybody confirm?

Keeping Up Posted May 8, 2008 Author Report Posted May 8, 2008 Thanks very much to everybody. I've just had a report that the boat was found this morning, on the T&M. I don't know the details yet. It must be relatively easy to steal a boat that is offered for sale. I think Liam may be right, we're going to see more of this.
Liam Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 That's good news... Do you know where abouts on the T&M? It's good to see that it didn't get too far from home and I hope the theiving bar stools were caught too.. Let's just hope there was no damage done, like on Cragdale.
alan_fincher Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 It must be relatively easy to steal a boat that is offered for sale. A doddle, I'd have thought.... 1) Go to somewhere like Whilton late in the day, with a selection of old Yale and ignition type keys in your pocket. 2) Ask to view boat you wish to steal - you will be handed the keys, and left to get on with it. 3) Go and view boat, and substitute your junk old keys for real ones. 4) Lock up with real keys, but return substituted keys to office. 5) Wait until after business hours, then take boat with keys you have kept. I suggest a late afternoon viewing, as there is little chance the keys will be handed to someone else that day, and found to be the wrong ones. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more. A.
sherbert Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 Tis good news nice to know things can happen quickly in a slow world of canals
Hairy-Neil Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 (edited) A doddle, I'd have thought.... I'm surprised it doesn't happen more. A. Easy to steal certainly, keys are pretty irelevant from what I've seen of boat security, however, getting away with it will fortunately always be the big issue and the greatest deterrent, short of also stealing the mobile crane and STGO Cat 2 transporter to escape on. Narrowboat's rarely disappear for long. The 3 lock miles/hour get away speed, plethora of curtain twitchers and the good old towpath telegraph make it a rare occurance. I think hire boats will always remain the most vunerable, with perhaps a fortnight before anyone notices the boat is missing. Tis good news nice to know things can happen quickly in a slow world of canals I once called BW for help after a family bereavement, to track down a relative out boating somewhere on the connected canal system. They were found within half a day..... Edited May 8, 2008 by Hairy-Neil
moggyjo Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 Years ago a boat arrived on our moorings and we got chatting, as you do, to the guy yhat was on it. A couple of days later I noticed the old bill on the opposite side of the canal, hiding behind bushes etc and then suddenly a whole load of coppers decended on this boat. Got told the boat had been stolen from up north, anyway although one of the coppers said that he had driven a boat before, asked me if I would go up as far as Thrupp lift bridge with them. So off we went, he haden't told me his previous experiance was on a speed boat, he went off like the clappers, I was saying to him, SLOW DOWN, SLOW DOWN, he said, I know what I'm doing Needles to say we got to Thrupp in minutes.
piratepixies Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 I think this must be the boat they are looking for in a police helicopter, they became very interrested in us and our boat on tuesday!!!!!!I get the feeling ours is a hell of alot scruffier than this one would be though,i have been keeping my eye out anyway.Must be awful dont know what id do if someone took ours! sparkles x
