tom_c Posted January 27, 2018 Author Report Posted January 27, 2018 I'm not too worried about a tug of war, it's only a J2! Half the capacity of the F4 and a slower throttle response, I can always run on petrol for a bit more power like you did with Joel in Nottingham! Just got to finish it and get it in the boat and run in first. Some of the bits for the electronic ignition system are ordered, looking forward to seeing how well that works. Tom

One question: where on the canal network do you think you will be able to buy paraffin in "engine size quantities", not just in 5 litre containers? The canals are very much set up for diesel boats! We had a similar consideration with a coal fired steam boat - 20kg sacks don't go far and are an expensive way of buying coal in large quantities! If only your brother ran a Boatyard and could put a kerosene tank in........ Oh. That's handy.
tom_c Posted February 2, 2018 Author Report Posted February 2, 2018 I had a bit of time this week, new front engine feet are on and it's starting to look more like an engine again next step, vaporisers and carburettors, hopefully next week. Tom
tom_c Posted March 28, 2018 Author Report Posted March 28, 2018 More progress today, hopefully lifting it into the boat over the weekend! 1

stagedamager Posted March 28, 2018 Report Posted March 28, 2018 cracking work...... if anyone needed a major engine rebuild..... I know where I would be going based on this....
BEngo Posted March 29, 2018 Report Posted March 29, 2018 Are those fixed links on the impulse drive, or are they just there for assembly? N
tom_c Posted March 29, 2018 Author Report Posted March 29, 2018 They are rubber O rings as I have left the correct springs on the boat. They are working for testing though Tom
tom_c Posted July 4, 2018 Author Report Posted July 4, 2018 Progress has been slow over the last couple of months, but the engine is roughly in position in the boat, next step is aligning it with the shaft then I will start on the fuel tanks and plumbing
tom_c Posted December 28, 2018 Author Report Posted December 28, 2018 Sorry for the long delay since the last update, today I started on the electronic ignition system to replace the magneto, this will use a trigger wheel and a sensor and bolts in place of the magneto. Just awaiting the the arrival of some bearings and can then assemble and fit to the engine. Tom
john.k Posted December 29, 2018 Report Posted December 29, 2018 Seems a shame to go to all that trouble and not refit a period correct magneto.
BEngo Posted December 29, 2018 Report Posted December 29, 2018 Where did the round flanged piece behind the die cast box start life please? It looks fairly modern. TY. N
tom_c Posted December 29, 2018 Author Report Posted December 29, 2018 The round flanged piece is a hub from a large fan, it just happens to be about the right size to fit the mounting. I have quite a few of them. I am keeping a magneto as a spare but they are not the most reliable of things. With this system I will be able to have multiple sparks for each firing stroke but still retain the manual ignition timing control the whole system will have cost less than a magneto ht coil rewind! Tom
tom_c Posted February 3, 2019 Author Report Posted February 3, 2019 a short video of the engine running on two cylinders
