boat fan
Well , with all due respect guys , those routered windows are just not authentic looking , nor antique. This style of window was very popular within Australia between 1901 - 1915 and was called Federation Style. You will not find a single home anywhere with those routered rounded corners on an authentic Fed. home , or even a reproduction one. These are the real deal : Any molding or beading was separately fitted in place , and never with rounded internal corners. boat fan
I will have some updates for you soon , life got in the way , but I will soon show some more progress. So little time at the moment. I am struggling a little to keep momentum. Working on the rear cabin . This is the small cabinet with a trial fit of the doors. Not a lot to show , but , hopefully there will be soon. The other thing I am working on is the fireplace flue , and its associated flashing on the roof. Spare piece of roofing will be fashioned to make a waterproof flashing for the flue. Silicone roof and gutter sealant. I will add rivets to hold this together. If the silicone glue line separates , " plan B " will be using 3M 5200. Not much to post here guys , but hopefully soon . Sir Percy
Hey Boat Fan, I hate this thread. I've been sat here going through your great posts/photos on a Bank Holiday Saturday morning, when work on the boat is calling..! Not surprised to read that you've a background in construction. Love the way you seem to think of, source, then make each stage of the project. Was there a long time spent in planning, preparation? Interesting bit on the canvas and TiteBond III for external walls. Not heard of PVA used for that before. Seems like there's good stuff to be found in salvage out there! Got plans for putting it into the water? Cheers and good luck with the rest of the build.
the barnacle
looking at the above photo the handrail has a right sag in it - maybe the camera view? i admit it looks good but was it built like this?

Got plans for putting it into the water? Cheers and good luck with the rest of the build. I hope I can sustain interest as I go along Sir Percy. I did plan the hulls and drew a free hand sketch , then I calculated the required displacement and the calculator did the rest. The hardest part is trying to come in at the 6.5 - 7 ton target. I made the hulls 150mm wider too , so that puts another ton displacement up my sleeve. The rest I just think about as I go along , trying to find a way around issues or whatever comes along. I am very pleased and impressed with the Titebond / canvas skin over the construction ply. It just shows no sign of weathering at all. As for launch time , well , as far as i`m concerned it cannot come soon enough . looking at the above photo the handrail has a right sag in it - maybe the camera view? i admit it looks good but was it built like this? I`m not sure which handrail we are speaking of barnacle ? I can confirm that these below are straight ? That Panasonic point and shoot camera does " bend ' things quite a bit. Take a look at the deck line along the bottom of the photo ..... ! AAHHHHHH SAYS ME...... You mean this photo ! Yes its built like that! The decks follow a gentle sheer line. boat fan
Just curious, why you decided to depart from the glass/epoxy, seeing as you seem to be a dab hand with it? Hope launch goes well. Slipway or crane? Hi Sir Percy, Yes , good question , and one I considered at great length . In the end , when it was time for action , I took a leap of faith and decided to go with the waterproof Titebond III and canvas for these main reasons : Glass epoxy is excellent and near bullet proof , but really expensive. Glass and epoxy is far more labor intensive. You have to mix the resin , spread the resin evenly over the class cloth , and then follow up with two more coats of resin to fill the weave . You must wash down and remove the amine blush between coats , and sand each time , for each layer ( lots of surface area ). The weather ( particularly temperature ) plays a big part in all this , during summer you are restricted to small areas if the temperature gets over 30 degrees C, and during the colder nights condensation can get into the resin and ruin the job . ( porosity caused by water molecules migrating into the resin ) Epoxy dust and fiberglass is itchy and messy and the sanding is not one of my favorite jobs. The Titebond and canvas was much more pleasant to work with. Single part , so no mixing , not sticky and messy , as its water based , so really easy clean up , no itchy sanding or dust . The canvas leaves a slight weave pattern to the surface , which is a great substrate for the paint layers to give a smooth and attractive finish . All in all , a much faster and far more pleasant job. I`m happy to say I have no regrets about that decision. As for the launch , I know someone that has an adjustable trailer capable of transporting pontoon houseboats . It is capable of carrying much larger boats than this humble little craft , but it needs to come from 350 km away , ( prime mover ) and is a very expensive exercise .Still , its cheaper than a crane , low loader , and slipway launch.
