Naughty-Cal's Fenland Foray

Yeah, that's what they're like in these parts, I often squeezed in and been told " oh sorry I didn't see you" (we're 60ft FFS) the idea of budging up is alien to many.

We had aimed for Padnal Bank. One small, ie 40ft narowboat moored right in the middle.

We made it as obvious as possible we were looking to moor but they just gawped out of the window. Similar at Prickwillow in both sets of moorings so we came back out onto the Great Ouse.

Nice stretch of moorings here anyway so we have not missed out.

Today we are heading back up river to the Five Miles from Anywhere where we will meet some friends in the morning.

We will need a splash of diesel before we head back out of Denver on Monday afternoon. Any suggestions as to where is best to get it?

Is your best bet if you have enough to get to 5 miles and back down river to the Ship Inn sort of area.

If not the Fish and Duck or Bridge Boat Yard in Ely

We have over half a tank left so no rush to get diesel but we would like to fill up before we head back out onto the Wash.

Just spotted on the Little Ouse Moorings website that they ate shut on Sunday and Monday so will head to one of the others. Got to pass the Fish and Duck anyway so will call in there later.

We have back tracked a little today and headed back to Ely to do a spot of shopping before heading to the Fish and Duck marina for diesel. The marina was shut but we have rung to arrange a top up tomorrow.

We have then headed up the River Cam to the Five Miles from Anywhere pub.

We met up with some friends yesterday and decided to head to Ely for the day.

We were lucky enough to get moorings outside the Cutter Inn, but it was a noisy spot overnight with some plankton trying to jump into the dinghy at 2.30am this morning and missing!

Serves them right :)

We have had a steady run today heading towards Denver and our exit from the Fens.

About half an hour ago we wondered why the sheep on the opposite bank were going mad. Turns out one had fallen in. Liam to the rescue with Asbo the dinghy and the help of a random man.

We were there on Wednesday and had some great fish and chips with homemade tartar sauce, lush. Those sheep are always pushing their luck, we sadly passed a well dead one last autumn, guess it had come to grief in a similar manner, well done Liam.

The food looked lovely in the Ship but unfortunately we had some salmon onboard that needed eating so didn't get to try it out.

Definitely one on the list for next time we visit though. We will certainly be back at some point.

Today we are leaving the Fens and heading back downstream to Kings Lynn on the evening tide for a couple of days.

We were talking to the lads turning the Bridge Boats around ready for their next hire on Friday. The boats may not be the most modern but they were very clean and tidy.

They all seemed to head for the Five Miles on their first night.

Sunray looked a bit difficult to get on and off though if moored side on!

I have looked at those boats and I think I would agree.

We didn't get wet on our run down the Tidal Great Ouse despite some threatening skies. But as soon as we landed in Kings Lynn the heavens opened. Had we not been held up by a narrowboat stranded in the channel at Denver we would probably have escaped a soaking but never mind.

Despite only travelling 20 miles yesterday it seemed like a long day with the break in the middle to wait for the tide. A good curry soon put us right again though.

Stranded in the channel, or stranded not quite in the channel?

Anyway, your photos are great and I must try harder on our next trip to remember to take more, especially now it's so easy to post them.
