When has site performance last been this bad?

Lovely.

However the whole point of starting this thread was simply to ask if if any body can remember it ever being this bad before and offer an alternative. Similar alternatives were being suggested on the CWDF Facebook page during the most recent outage.

I moderate on a site that I have been a member of since 2012. I can recall one day's outage in that time, it is however funded to a degree by accepting adverts. Whereas here the forum is financially supported by the owner and voluntary donations of others.

I don't think it requires technical expertise to realise one of the issues the forum has relates to how it's funded.

Perhaps this site has had it's time.

Dare I say it but actually you could be right.

I come here less and less, as do others I notice. Good some might say (whatever I say back) but a forum only stays alive if people bother to post, and if they try to post but can't they soon get fed up.

It's a cliche but I think recent days have shown the site is at a bit of a crossroads.

Sadly I have to agree with you.

I must say I use Facebook mainly now, some good groups ease of use and easy to upload photos

That took four clicks and four out of memory messages to see your reply.

Which the site even managed to duplicate.......

It's rapidly becoming completely unusable.

I realise that this might just be trying to keep up at the back, but having finally managed to actually open a topic ( after waiting ages mind you) and for once not getting a 'Fatal Error' message...does anyone have an actual explanation of why it's all gone pear shaped?

http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=76843&hl=explains the issues reasonably well.

I think it must be rather demoralising for the folk trying to fix it, for you to whinge on like this. If you don't like the forum, go somewhere else. Or why not just come straight out with it and say "WE ARE ALL DOOOOOOMEDD" whilst dancing naked around a maypole in the dead of night whipping yourselves with nettles?

Reporting issues is one thing, but try to have some empathy with those working hard on your behalf, don't just whinge and act like circling vultures waiting for the final death throes.

I think that must be the most self indulgent post I have seen on here to date.

May I sneak in here with a comment.

Thank you, Dan has announced that in the next week they are putting the forum with a host that specialises with forums. That's good news.

However, will this cost more. Do we need to dig deep into our coffers and donate hard earned to assist? Just a couple of English pounds from many would realise a fair amount.

When my pension becomes available I will chuck a couple the sites way. The last week or so had made me aware of how much I use the forum.

Indeed perish the thought anybody should raise the remotest hint of critisicismm, or indeed offer a suggestion as to how things might be improved.

I don't think either Dan or myself have ever suppressed the right of anyone to criticise. Admittedly if the site is flaky and underperforms, the ability to - alongside the ability to use it for everything else it should be doing - is affected. Indeed we welcome all feedback and its a valuable part of the information we have.

I've focused mainly on the technical aspects but over the past few weeks its become clear that there's simply not the performance available from the host, both server performance and skill/availability of their tech support team which is predominantly based overseas. Specifically, the disk speed needed to run a large database simply isn't there. Without a resolution of this in sight, we are moving hosts which while this will probably result in an amount of downtime, should be a one-off and from completion of migration onwards give a much more stable base to get on with more interesting work such as bringing new features and improvements.

I am not that techy but how come it worked fine until you started tinkering with it? Might just be a coincidence but hey that is what seems to have happened
