The red flag is out at Northampton on the Nene

Email received from the Environment Agency this morning (Tuesday 18th November 2014)...

Strong Stream Advice has been issued for the River Nene. Several locks on the River Nene are closed to navigation and are being used to discharge flood waters.

The Environment Agency strongly advises against attempting to boat on the River Nene. River flows are above normal and head-room at some sites will be restricted.

In an emergency, please contact the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60 stating you are in the Anglian Region.

The annoying thing about red flags for the Nene, is that it counts as just 1 section all the way from Northampton to Peterborough.

This year, for the first time, they've got a bit more subtle on the Gt Ouse, there's now the equivalent of Thames's yellow boards. The river went to warning three days back, then to SSA yesterday, and this morning I got an automatic message to say that it had gone back to warning status above St Ives, but was still on SSA from St Ives to Earth.

I wonder if the Nene will start to do the same?

I wouldn't fancy the turn into Billings with a pair when the river's under SSA!

I've never fancied the turn into Billings under any circumstances!

You and me alike.

Short strap out the lock, nose in and let the butty push the back end round.

Slowly forwards with the fore end of the butty and let the current take the back end round.

Breast up in the bridge before entering the marina.

Bish Bash Bosh.

Piece of cake.

(You and I both know it won't be this simple!!!!!)

In fact, it's probably best if no one is watching!

I think I would just stay in Northampton, there is a rally there next summer.

Same here, never liked it even under normal circumstances. 1st 3 times I did it I got stuck across the bridge going in & going out. The last time I did it I got around in 1 go without hitting anything or getting stuck... cant see what all the fuss is about! smiley-dance013.gif

Who. Moi??

Arrived at Billing. Having fully checked river levels and flow rates risked it before the river gets worse.

Down in just over 2 hours and managed to get in breasted up.

I couldn't believe it. I nipped to B&Q for 10 minutes and came back, the lock was turned and I had missed the moving boats on the Nene.
