My boat sounds broken!

I think you may be getting confused. I have not had any breakdown and there has been no change in how my gearbox behaves over time.

Sorry alan it should have said "me and BSP have the same engine/gearbox"

Cheshire~Rose's boat also has the same engine and similar gearbox (PRM Delta instead of a 150), but a different Aquadrive. I know two are by Black Prince, I'm not sure who built Carrie Lou

Richard do you suspect it being oil drag or could there be an adjustment needed somewhere. Sorry for asking but just for future reference incase ours goes the same way seeing as ours and BSP's boats are twins.

It is oil drag. There isn't anything to adjust on these boxes, unlike the manual ones.

I wonder if the Clanger checked her box before or after her cruise?

Both. And it did it both times. In fact the rotation was slightly faster after the cruise. I also checked it on 10th March when I posted on here, and it did the same thing.

Now if the rotation made a music box sound that'd be a different matter....

And then some... Weren't our boats were born just one index number apart?

Parsons boxes are very prone to dragging ahead when in neutral, it can get quite troublesome when they've seen life for a while, I shan't bother explaining why unless someone really needs to know.

My Lister Blackstone 3G does exactly the same too...helps keep you away from cills!

I put it down to the oil drag between the ahead clutch plates and it seems to be a feature of epicyclic boxes....I just find it a feature although it seems to worry other boaters more who seem to think I don't know where neutral is!!

Cheers

My 2G box seems to swap between forward and reverse a few times as it warms up. The neutral point where the drag on the forward clutch balances the drag on the reverse brakeband wanders around all over the place until it's hot. Then there's a nice defined out-of-gear position.

How hot does it need to get? I'd been cruising for three hours and the rotation was still happening.

Normal temperature. Takes half hour or so. Less if it's working hard. My boat is probably heavier and deeper than Mabel Stark but I honestly can't detect any significant boat movement from the gearbox drag which is moving the prop at much less than one rev per second.

Carrie~Lou is a Pinder boat. Engine was marinised by Prior Boats

This is going to be easier than I thought:
