I think my engine blew up :(

Phew ok part is in place and all seals and clips snug and tight. Seems its all for naught though if I've got to call someone out to check other stuff tho lol. Damnnn was hopin to deal with this and be able to have lights tonight and charge my phone. Thanks for everyone's help tho :)

Well..... I am impressed with his un-daunted approach and willingness to help and diagnose the problem himself !! I can see its a big issue for those that don't understand or aren't familiar with such things

Forgot to mention now Im gonna top it up again with water and antifreeze after a ton of it fell out when I took the rubber bit off. I'm not THAT stupid lol

Ok part number is polar a3/783

I have a pretty good collection of replacement parts in storage and have another new one with me. It's got a big rubber cap over the large end so I'm gonna try fitting it now

 

Assuming i manage to fit it, in which will be only my second attempt ever at engine maintenance after changing a battery....how the heck will I know if theres head gasket damage?

Take off the oil filler cap. If there's this nasty residue formed like dirty mayonnaise around the inside of the cap, that indicates head gasket damage.

Despite some of the unhelpful digs you've received here, you displayed admirable resolve and perseverance in dealing as best you can with a difficult situation and learned loads in the process. At this rate you'll be an expert in no time.

 

Good luck with getting the engine looked at and hoping you are up and running again soon! :D

Thank you Nick - I realise I can make things worse by just fiddling about ( I repair pcs all the time where people have just gone inside and used the Force to fix em) so that's why I came here cause you lot know your stuff :)

No residue whatsoever on filler cap, inside or on dipstick. The oil is as black as it was before and during the 'incident'

Wow thanks :) at least i know now where my header tank is and that my main water tank does not magically feed the engine lol

They were quite mild digs really. I am sure that the digs will soon become leg pulls if he continues to show this sort of attitude.

If by some miracle your engine has survived this incident I would treat it to an oil change. Your oil should have a golden tinge not black!

It's a BMC, Rachel.

 

Not saying it shouln't have an oil change, but trust me if it is a typical BMC, within not many hours running, the oil will be black.

 

That's normal, not a fault!

Thank you :) Well the new stuff I put in is golden but yes I see your point. For now I'll just be happy to worry about the water before the oil. I hear they don't mix well...I'll get my coat

If it is a Polar header tank, it will almost certainly have "Polar" cast in to it. The "rubber" parts do usually carry their number, likely to be A3/783 if it is the end that has the connection to the skin tank on, as stated. (The other end blanking cap being A3/703, I think).

 

I believe Bowman heat exchangers also have identification cast in, but am not sure if the "rubber" parts carry identification.

 

You need the correct ones - they do not have the same size connection. If you are lucky it will be Bowman, as the parts generally seem to be cheaper!

 

There seems to be a fair chance the engine may have suffered head gasket or other failure from the overheating though, so I echo the advice not to just replace split parts and fire it up, hoping all is well.

 

"Jelunga" your geography is slightly out - Calcutt are on the Birmingham main line of the GU. OK, it's not far from the Oxford, but certainly not on it!

 

Quite right Alan. I need to get out more. I knew it was on a canal somewhere near a lock!

Bowman exchangers generally do have it cast on them.

If as you say the hose is split at the top, be aware that this pipe could be under pressure at running temp so leakage will be inevitable and scalding a possibility.

From my expeiences with a Bowman/Bmc the raw water impeller is worth checking ( little belt driven doodad opposite the alternator at the front of the engine!) as a cause of the overheating. If you are going to turn the engine over by hand/spanner - make sure the engine stop is pulled right out first. I know it's unlikely to fire but there's always a first time.

The BMC is very repairable without too many specialist tools and parts are available, it's a good engine to learn with.

Phew!!! Ok water topped up to just below neck of header tank...oil filler cap replaced (it just 'sits' on there, doesn't clip or screw on...that's normal right?

I also checked in accordance with Richards post earlier and indeed I can turn the engine by hand.

No trace of mayonnaise like substance in either oil filler or dipstick. Oil at maximum level. Double checked all jubilee clips. Flaps...check...rudder...check...

Now I'm at the worrying part lol

Does anyone have any Jerry Springer type final thoughts before I turn the key? Eg...run It slow, normal or fast...whst to look for or listen for etc....I'll give it 10 mins just in case :)

If one hose has gone due to old age the betting is that the others are also in a poor state. I'd consider changing all of the other hoses in the cooling system as a precautionary measure.

As soon as possible- in due course. Keep an eye on the other hoses until it's up to pressure for a while.

 

I can't wait that long to see if it starts up okay.
