FrigateCaptain Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 Silly question but...... I'm looking at flying again, something I've not done in years (remote control) and I'm thinking of digging my old catalina out. It has a 8 wing span and twin ic motors. I fly with public liability insurance and am wondering if I could land on the canal in quieter spots? I'm fully aware that trying to land my me109 on the towpath is a really bad idea!

There is help out there if you look for it. You could try the Samaritans.

I think this is something that BW have included in new laws...and comes under the same heading as model boats. I think..it now involves a £500 fine ? bob

I dont see any problem as long as it displays its licence and conforms to the BSS
nb Innisfree Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 Keep the speed down past moored boats.
churchward Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 I dont see any problem as long as it displays its licence and conforms to the BSS Hmmm I guess so but the landing speed of the Catalina will be above the 4mph limit and with the wingspan of 104ft it is going to be a one way ticket as you will rip the wings off against the trees bushes buildings etc! One could always try it at Tixal wide though!!

The catalina has a wing span of 8 foot and landing speed of about 6-8 mph, but will be stopped after 15m

Sounds like really good idea. What about the measured mile at Henley during regatta week. They'd probably pay you as it would give the crowd a break from all that rowing. I'll bring my Vulcan and drop flour bombs on em too. bizzard.

Burgiesburnin Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 It will be stopped a lot sooner than 15m. How deep is the water there?

bizzard Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 Why's it daft? I can use my boat, a canoe ect...... I'd just go ahead and do it,sounds great,i'd like to come and watch. I once took an radio controlled plane to RAF Kenley without permission, every one was enthralled,it all adds to the excitement. bizzard.
Top cat Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 I'm a model flyer too and take a model with me when I go noating. I've thought about landing my (much smaller) on the canal but have yet to find somwhere with an adequately clear approach and of course that bit of canal has to be dead into wind. So far I've found it best to find a suitable field and fly from that. Regards TC
