Can You Identify A Boat Declared As Having No Home Mooring From it's BW Licence.

Just received our brand new licence, a rather fetching bright red colour this year! Our number is BW-065-007 which seems to fit the norm for licence holders without a permanent mooring.

On the mounting "evidence" I think all I'm now prepared to say is....

If the licence bears a "BW-xxx-007" code, then the likelihood is that it's owners have declared themselves as not having a home mooring.

BUT

The reverse does not always seem to be true, perhaps because of laxness in the procedures when a boat first moves into that situation, when it has previously had a home mooring.

Unless someone can prove otherwise, I'm inclined to think it is reasonably safe to assume "BW-xxx-007" means no home mooring declared, (and that BW-007-xxx means something else!!), but not that this is a way of identifying every boat with a CC declaration.

That said, it does seem to have been pretty reliable for 21 boats out of 21, but perhaps I just got "lucky"!

But let's be quite honest - one gives out far more information about oneself moving about with a mobile phone, using a credit card and driving past countless cameras that can automatically recognise number-plates, than one is likely to do by leaving a BW licence disk displayed in our boat window.

Yes, that's true, but I thought we were talking about boats?

I was merely pointing out that the extension of the surveillance society onto our waterways is probably something that isn't very popular. Yet despite this through focusing on who's mooring where and for how long, I think many of those who would normally oppose such measures may inadvertently be participating in their introduction.

As a slight aside - Does anyone know what a GG-xxx-xxx code might mean ? Would I be suspicious in thinking that "GG" represents somewhere where moorings are cheap, and it is easy to obtain a "paper" mooring ?

Grand Union Canal, Slough Arm.

You know that for definite, Dave ?

I'd need to check again, but I think it wculd kill the idea of the next number being the number of kilometres the mooring is along it.

Maybe wrong on that, though.....

I don't know where Dave gets his info, but "Saul Junction" has over 300 boats within 200 metres of it, so I'd forget that one

If anyone is moored at the second two, they should appeal....

It's not owned by BW, and isn't connected to the system

edited to add, and isn't currently navigable

But apparently BW actually own the bridges, and have them on their asset register.

No they don't (although they leased them briefly), Dave, please remember exactly what my role is with the Stroudwater Canal

I'll be on the phone to BW in the morning, but I won't name my source

Thank you, without files to hand that doesn't necessarily make it any better, I'll check

But it does show that mooring code is related to asset code...

Yup.

These are "Functional Location Codes", and include some locations that are stated as not BW owned

Here are the full lists of BW "Principal Assets" by functional location.

(Bridges, locks, embankments etc etc)

Maybe there is no 'secret' to the coding on our licence - maybe we just become a 1 year BW asset ?

Edit - apologies - its not a full list, just an arrears list

Slough Arm. Only moorings there are Packet Boat Marina (entrance at the beginning of the Slough Arm) and Highline iver neither of which can be called cheap in the current scheme of things.

Edit  do keep up D, you're rather behind on this one as they've already cracked it, time for a beer and some popcorn
