Smartbank connection

Did I complain about the instructions for my spade?

Smartbank is so technically advanced that it requires the same level of installation instructions as..... a spade?

My opinion is that you're an ..........

Indeed I am, along with anyone else who dares upset the great ego gibbo.

I've done tha hail mary's, now where did I leave that hair shirt?

Prefer Victron myself. Don't recall having to drill holes in the cases.....

I'd rather drill holes in the case than have them in the wrong place

Oh, and if you hadn't noticed, the folk who changed the case and didn't amend the instructions to reflect this are Merlin, not Gibbo.

No. For once you can feel special. It's just you.

Sorry, took a while to get back, I'm painting a wall and struggling with the brush.

I'm holding the comfy end but the stick on the other end doesn't seem very good at spreading paint.

You don't do SmartPaintBrushes as well as SmartSpades do you?

'Fraid not, but if you let me know who makes it I'll get on to the maufacturer and ask him for an updated manual. It may well tell you which end to hold.

Nah, I'm sure the instructions with mine (same setup) was dead straightforward.

I would help, but I'm at work and it isn't in front of me, and my brain is to addled to remember how it went together.

Main way of frying things is to not understand the layout of the four coil connections onto the Albright relay. Test them first, so you know which are commoned.

I've just started getting to grips with my electrics. I've covered the two redundant teminals with a couple of fully insulate crimps so that I'm not tempted to push a wire on to them.

(Thanks for your PM Gibbo)

I am pretty useless when it comes to electrics (willing to learn) and yet I managed to install both units at seperate times having invested in smart gauge first. I followed the "crap" instructions and hey presto they worked just like it said on the tin. I can only assume anyone who can't follow the instructions must be a worse electrician than me or not willing to listen to advice which I know to be freely available if required. One item worthy of note on SB is that the wiring requires pre assembly as the screws securing the unit are at the back when it is fixed to the bulkhead.

My problem was that if I followed the instructions to the letter i'd still be reading them to find an answer, on one page it says there is a remote socket on the smartbank when there isn't, so you think 'I'll have a look in the box' a little later in the book it mentions that 'all warantees will be voided it the boxes are tampered with or opened' so what would you do?

The SmartBank and SmartGuage units are all now installed and up and running, (along with a victron battery monitor and shunt) the whole kit and caboodle took two days to intsall  (lots of trips to the shops for bits and bobs slowed me a little) My original splitcharge relay was installed in the battery compartment, i wasn't that happy having an open style contactor/relay in the battery bay so I relocated it in the engine room, and made a little box to hold the relay and the smartbank which kept it tidy, I need to wire an inverter in soon, that will need 95sqmm cable, so there was little point in running less from the Victron shunt to the Battery neg. I had no 95-10 ends so another trip out to Reading Marine got me the bits (cheers Andy  ) All systems worked well straight from the box, i've not bothered yet to play with any of the setups on the smartguage/bank as it was by then too hot in the engine room to concentrate.

I now have a comprehensive battery information/management set up (something i've managed without on my old boat for 10 years) I'm sure it will allow me to optimise my charging 'habits' and hopefully lead to less engine running time.

Cheers for all the help

Paul

Hi Paul,

I got a 6-way one recently but they do a 4-way one as well

The 6 way was about £6 from E-Bay I think - I will trawl thru my Paypal payments to see if I can recall the vendor...

I suppose you were lucky in that I have been looking for these things myself, for maybe similar reasons, and I happened to see your request for info. Whatever, I am glad to hopefully have been of some help.

I was quite happy with the battery bank wiring up until now, but the addition of various light wires and fuses directley to the banks, has made it look a bit tatty IMO so it needs a fettle.

I think i'm CDO (a bit like OCD but put nicely in alphabetical order)

I used a double flush mounted domestic plug box with a blank cover and four blade type fuses (the fuse holders clip together) fixed to the back of the box with velcro!

As you can see I'm no electrician (although it works a treat) and I did manage to wire up the SmartGuage and SmartBank all by myself - excellent piece of kit, it does what it says on the box!
