Shroppie Stoppage

BW has shut Sheldon embankment to inspect a leak which may be serious. For practical purposes there is no way through from Norbury to M. Drayton. Dewatering section today, Fri. and may decide to reopen by Monday for traffic but could declare a full breach by late today. As of 9.30am Friday BW are advising that no boats come on to the Shroppie from Autherley to Hurlesdon as they have shut Audlem, Tyrley and Adderley flights to save water! If this is a real nasty then they dont want extra boats to handle and winding holes are limited!

It is infact SHEBDON embankment that has a serious leak. The stop planks were put in at 6.00pm last night at the new bridge at Shebdon (Br. 44) and Park Heath (Br.48) and Audlem has been closed to conserve water. The Shroppie remains open to the south of the stoppage and boats can wind at both Norbury Junction and Grub Street. All services are still available at Norbury. We are waiting for an update from the engineers.

Thanks for the clarification, David. I'm sure that I and other Shroppie boaters would appreciate you passing on anything else you hear via the forum.

Latest update from BW:

Emergency Stoppage at Shebdon Embankment and Audlem Lock Flight

Thursday 13 August 2009 until further notice

UPDATE as at 12.45pm 14.08.09 -

Following investigation of the problem at Shebdon Embankment we have found that an extensive repair is required to the canal bed before we can re-open the navigation. This is likely to take until the middle of next week to complete. We have mobilised contractors to the site and are working to reinstate the water feed to the Market Drayton, Audlem and Nantwich areas as a priority. We hope to achieve this over the weekend. Customers should follow the instructions of British Waterways’ staff on site as we try to minimise the disruption that this closure will cause. The towpaths in the vicinity of the breach are closed until further notice.

I think it is a conspiracy to confuse us. Canal names that are similar should be changed  Maybe then I would know where I am. Fradley Fazeley; Hilperton Hilmorton; two separate Whittingtons. Two Welfords both on the river Avon.

Probably more.

Emergency Stoppage at Shebdon Embankment and Audlem Lock Flight

Update Saturday 14/08/09

Dam is being erected, they hope to pump water to Tyrley this afternoon. This may allow lockage through to Audlem etc for those who wish to turn and head North. Once they have cleared the boats that are stranded at Shebdon they will start on the leak. If it is simple then the work should be completed Weds/Thursday. There is a big build up of boats at Norbury and Drayton, and will take time to clear. If they find more problems, then who knows? All boats are still being advised to stay away until there is 'hard news'. If this is bad then folk are in for a long wait.

The boards are out of bridge 44. The boats at Shebdon Wharf can head south. Northbound boats waiting at the Anchor can wind there and head back. I can put everything back in my cupboards after tilting over too far...

Update Saturday pm (posted Sun am)

True, You can now get to Shebdon Wharf to wind. Breach is secured by coffer dam at Cadbury Wharf. They have been pumping past this all night, so there should be enough water to reopen Tyrley flight later today, then Adderley and Audlem.

There are worries about the state of the embankment. Specialists will be on site Monday to assess. If they think its safe then work will continue and they hope to open Thursday. If the bank is bad then the stoppage is indefinite and at worst could last til winter. If you have to go North or South then T & M is the safe bet. There are a lot of boats hovering below Norbury so mooring is limited.

I'm now off the Shroppie so cant update, but David Ray (Hyperion) at Norbury will post info as he can.

They have done a lot of work on that bit of canal over the last few years. Wonder if one of the new piles caused something to shift and water to begin to seep. Wouldn't be the first time given the embankments were originally built of ?

We have met boats this morning, going up Stoke Bruerne flight, expecting to head for the Shroppie.

It seems the bush telegraph isn't working yet.

We are breathing a deep sigh of relief that we came down it more or less exactly a week ago - we would have struggled to find the extra days to go back around the T&M.

Oh heck - we're coming up the Coventry and planned on returning to Hurslton via the Shroppie - guess it's up the Trent & Mersey - another miserable trip through Stoke awaits!

I don't know what your on about , we all really enjoyed Stoke on our trip around the Four Counties. A facinating place.

I agree wholeheartedly.

We really enjoyed all of that bit of the T&M, which has (in my view) a higher "interest factor" than the Shroppie.

The mooring around a mile south of Harecastle watching a sunset over a great lake was an unexpected bonus.

We liked Heartbreak Hill too - particularly speeding through the twinned locks. Other than I wouldn't have had time to do it, I'd have loved the excuse to do the T&M again in the reverse direction.
