I think you an change the display name within account settings, but to change it permanently, you probably have to ask a moderator to intervene. Not sure what you mean. If you change it you then log in with the new name but same password. You can only change it once every 180 days though. It looks like the software now allows the display name as a log in. I assumed that may be different than user name. Apparently not. That would be annoying... 😞 Mind you, that works both ways... 😉 Not sure with this forum software, but with the variety of other softwares I've worked with each user has a unique ID (always numeric) and all actions and preferences are keyed on the ID. Numbers are faster than text in SQL DB's (or they used to be ...). As this is a well established forum software I'd expect it to be the same.
