David Mack Posted April 22, 2021 Report Posted April 22, 2021 Is this an integral steel tank? Are you referring to painting it?
blackrose Posted April 22, 2021 Report Posted April 22, 2021 Assuming it is an integral tank, what was it previously "done" with?
haza Posted April 22, 2021 Author Report Posted April 22, 2021 black bitumen but forgot the name of it sorry
Chewbacka Posted April 22, 2021 Report Posted April 22, 2021 The best stuff for a steel water tank is two pack epoxy, BUT it costs a lot more than bitumen AND it has to be applied to a clean, suitable surface, and bitumen is not a suitable base coat, nor is it easy to remove every trace.
David Mack Posted April 22, 2021 Report Posted April 22, 2021 When this came up a while ago I said that bitumen paint is no longer approved for drinking water tanks. Someone replied with a link to a manufacturer's website or data sheet saying their product was not certified for use in new tanks, but was ideal for recoating tanks previously painted with bitumen. I can't now remember which manufacturer/product that was, but a forum search might find it.

Tank had been very neglected and took several days to clean up properly. Rylards went on beautifully and has been very successful. Tank is still looking immaculate (emptied and dried it over the winter).
