And below the painting of the event commissioned by BW(CaRT) at the time, painted by the well known Sheffield artist Joe Scarborough, who has sadly had to move off his Narrowboat after more than 25 years living at Victoria Quays.

A sad day for one of  Victor Waddingtons Barges designed in his head before boat architects were needed.

From WaterwaysWorld Feb/Mar1983:

Confidence on the Waterways.
One criticism often levelled at inland waterway transport is that it is too slow. In December [1982] a 330ton load completed half of its journey by water in 5 uneventful hours while the other half of its journey by road took over 5 days, in the quiet hours, and needed police escorts, strengthening of motorway bridges, and complete closure of part of the M18. Sadly, it was the road journey that attracted all the national publicity.

The 330ton casting was shipped from Germany to Goole for transport to Sheffield for machining. It was then to be re-exported via Goole to Mexico, all as part of a £350m contract won by DavyMcKee of Sheffield for a new steel rolling mill. The castings are too heavy for road bridges between Goole and Doncaster, and too large for rail transport. Water transport is the only way for the loads to be moved. Without the waterways in this area, the valuable order might have been lost to another country, demonstrating one way our waterways have a major role to play in an integrated transport policy.

The journey from Goole to Doncaster was therefore made by waterway, then by road to Sheffield.

A complication was that no existing boat could carry the load on the depth of water that BritishWaterways could guarantee. Waddingtons of Swinton purpose-built a new vessel from two existing 75ft by 20ft lighters the RilToto and the RilDora, both built in 1923 by HenryScarr of Hessle for RishworthIngleby&Lofthouse. Waddingtons sliced off the bows of the former and the stern of the latter and joined them with a new centre section to give a barge of 140ft length overall with a beam of 19ft6in, the widest that can navigate to Doncaster, and aptly named it Confidence. In the first B&W picture taken in summer of 1982, see the original lines of the top strakes of the two lighters and the new centre section. In the second, spot-the-join. The tug alongside is  Kingfisher, specially adapted from the stern of a tanker barge.

Confidence carried the 330ton load on a 7ft draught. It made fair speed on the canals from Goole to Doncaster, preceded by the BWB TomPudding tug WaterHaigh, equipped with echo sounders to find shallow spots, and pushed by Kingfisher.

Once machined, the casting, still weighing in excess of 300 tons, will use the same route to return to Goole, and will eventually be followed by three similar castings in each direction. With the completion of work on the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation scheduled for Spring [1983], it might be possible to take the Confidence to Rotherham, and reduce the time-consuming road journey. Two more of the castings are due to travel up the canal from Goole to Doncaster mid-March [1983].

On this day 2004

Reedham Ferry onboard Brinks Breakaway 1.

Our first holiday afloat and one which cemented our love of boating.

Also the first time we met a couple who would many years later go one to become firm friends we spent many happy hours cruising with. The boat with the green canopy to the far left of the picture. They still have the same boat now.
