The Bond Birmingham Grand Union  looking towards the aqueduct  over River Rea  near Bordesley Compare 4Dec2012 (posted this day 2020)

I went past The Bond a few weeks ago and it had all closed down and seemed to be undergoing some sort of conversion - probably into something residential. I was a bit surprised because until the summer just gone my daughter had spent Saturday's there doing dance training.

I wonder if the firefighters' operations manual says that to use their red firedoor, open a top paddle, and if it's a more-than-a-lockful incident, to walk up the flight opening all the paddles.

Norwood Tunnel  Chesterfield Canal. Our only boating visit here was in September 2009, when we combined crews for the afternoon with Fulbourne (then too wide for Stret Lock)L1570_20090905_0379s.jpg.935cb36a60e9efdc990c113cb73a0104.jpg

And as Peter's photos show, that sign had the effect of discouraging boats from going beyond the winding hole, so we had to navigate through a lot of weed and round one or two fallen branches. It all looks a lot better in last Saturday's photos.

You've done well if you've got your boat to the western portal of Norwood Tunnel!!

Oops! Eastern of  course. I did go see the western end and the remains of the lock flight heading down towards Chesterfield, but that was on foot. No pictures unfortunately.

Note to self. Western end of navigable canal does not equal western portal of tunnel!
