The clearing of the sludge above the lock was the beginning of a significant volunteer effort around the canal, and across all the Calder Valley communities, to help the recovery from the flooding.

Bit different scenery. In 1988 we went to India and I wanted to swim in the sea on Christmas Day so went to Goa . After new year went south to Mangalore and Cochin and came across these Dow like boats loading in Mangalore. They are loading roof tiles from the truck and one boat had some cows on board. All very manual labour. They trade to the Lakshadweep  islands and coastal .

Actually you can still seem the same style of lorry now. There were two makes Ashok Leyland and Tata who now of course own Land Rover. They must produce basic chassis cabs which are added to with wooden additions to the cab and often highly decorated. They wave heads out of the window but give no real traffic signs. On the back of them is a sign saying Horn Please but everybody drives with the horn going all the time.

Never a dull moment on Indian roada. Overtaking is a matter of pride, and Might is Right. Trucks are licenced to carry 25 per cent more than the manufactuerer's recomendation - and do. It takes many people to drive one of these things: one to hold the steering wheel, the rest to provide encouragement.

Still in India and now Cochin. Inside the harbour there are lots  of backwaters and these local boats carry goods and ferries run between the islands and villages. Now there are holiday boats that offer some luxury trips. There are also prawn farms .

The Chinese fishing nets are at the entrance to the harbour and they work on the tides. The catch we saw was very poor.
