Stumbled upon this ancient structure today, apparently unseen by human eye for centuries...

Actually it's been positively heaving on the Huddersfield Narrow today - we saw two other boats, and one of them was moving!

Ahh, that does bring back memories. It is the knocked through old lock I got stuck in for 3 and a half hours in coming down (i.e. from 3E to 1E) waiting for CRT to come and let more water down. They were busy over on the Peak Forest apparently.

Water taken from the Huddesfield Narrow to act as cooling water. I would have thought that the CRT could request a charge for that and stipulate that it is returned again. In the old times of canal ownership, canal companies used to gain revenue from water, it is surprising that the CRT do not do this in modern times.

CRT make more money from water extraction and discharge licences than they do from boats.
