  1. I believe so. @Sir Nibble or @Tony Brooks know a lot more about alternators than me though.
  2. You should have just given the old one a derv bath. It worked wonders for mine.
  3. As I keep repeating, I very much doubt that the alternator has a 13.6V regulator in it. It’s far more likely that the alternator is faulty. There are several folks who repair alternators. Our very own Snibs is one. Cox electrical in Atherstone is another. Repair will be considerably cheaper than replacement.
  4. I refer you to the post before yours.
  5. I thought I read that it did have.
  6. That’s what I figured. The farmer who I rent the building off rust-proofs most of his equipment with diesel. This is what set me off...
  7. You made that up! Well, there are plenty to choose from...
  8. Not particularly. Saw bench top I keep waxed. Perhaps I’m worrying about nothing.
  9. Not sure how I’d get powdered graphite inside unless I stripped it down. It feels fine just as it is following its nice derv bath but I worry that perhaps it could now corrode internally?
  10. I was wondering that. “No oomph” sounds like the prop is working but not very well.
  11. Surely that should be ‘gold face’ experience...
  12. No oven... ... and the price becomes more realistic. However, as said, the hull is the most important part of any survey.
  13. I have a tall container to lower it into before I switch on Good idea about fast though, I’ll move the belts.
  14. Thanks but I really don’t need to strip it down. It’s not had much use and after its 4 day dunk it’s as good as new. I’ll sit it on its bum and pour some oil down it and wait a day or two for it to drain through. Mine looks a lot like this:li
  15. It’s certainly happening round our way - Nuneaton. Seen loads recently.
  16. Is the water pump working? Coolant level normal? Otherwise it’s probably an airlock.
  17. Definitely buy second hand. The initial loss is always because it’s not new any more. Just like a car.
  18. Pebbledashed narrowboat. That’d be different...
  19. Feedback as promised. A 4 day soak in diesel had the chuck spinnng if you even blew on it hard, so a total success I wasn’t sure what to lubricate it with so for now it’s back on the quill as it came out of the diesel bath. Does it need lubricating? If so, will 3-in-1 do the job?
  20. I can’t see this. A 175A alternator isn’t being stressed at circa 40A output so should be regulating at 14.4V+. If the batteries are pulling the voltage down they can only do so by demanding a high current - simple Ohms law - and they aren’t.
