  1. Paraffin was used on a rather untidy steam ploughing traction engine covered in all the imaginables you'd get in a field along with multiple types of grease, hydraulic oil and general crap. It worked really well but be prepared to end up looking like your bilges did when you finish. As an idea it may be worth asking the steam traction engine people what they use - depending on if you have contacts in that area or can find an online forum? Just a suggestion.
  2. No problem with mooring up in Castlefield (72hrs) and using the Metrolink to hop about town from Deansgate Castlefield station between 5 and 10 mins max from any mooring in Castlefield.
  3. Give them a call and find out 07918 677783
  4. A suitable bridge and a tirfor
  5. At a recent meeting it was asked whether the enforcement officer has had any form of training etc. It turns out he hasn't and so it was advised that he should be CRB and generally security checked aswell as being placed on an industry standard customer service training course. The canal company have stated that the enforcement officers role will be reviewed.
  6. You'll have problems, he's retired now!
  7. Years ago it used to have a regular closing and opening time but these days it's only closed if they're expecting a ship passage. It's to save money and wages for manpower.
  8. Aswell as various random and uncommunicated changes such as the notice period for passage through Pomona Lock going from 72hrs to 14 days notice, and the Castlefield service block being closed for general use. Lots of changes being made without any notice apart from them sneaking them onto ab obscure page on their website.
  9. Is the UCC dry dock DIY?
  10. They need to avoid the area at all costs at the end of June then!
  11. After a cooler night last night I decided to light the fire earlier as the light faded. As is usually the way in this "halfway" situation it seems to cool to go without a fire but then too warm with one so the doors are widr open to get rid of some heat! Roll on January and February
  12. This closure is to remove the current bridge and replace it with a much bigger bridge, one that will take full HGV vehicles, so I guess some sort of development work will be taking place shortly after completion of this stoppage.
  13. And just to let you know Helen, I've just sent Ian a text with a quick explanation and passed on the numbers you gave me. Liam
  14. Yes, I'm making contact with Ian to pass their number on, so it's upto Ian if he wants to make contact or not. I'd never give out a phone number, email address or any other form of contact details unless specifically requested to do so by the owner of said details!
  15. As a side note I've just realised I have the phone number for the boat owner behind too. The joys of coal boat customer contact lists
  16. Yes it's definitely the original front end, with a new motor counter.
  17. I have his phone number but obviously dont want to give it out. Send me your number and I'll pass it on It's a star class butty that's been motorised and now has a JP2. Around 60ft if I remember rightly.
  18. There is a meeting on Thursday with various representatives from canal organisations such as the IWA and the FBCC which the Bridgewater Trustees will be attending. When I hear I'll update here with any info.
  19. Phone 101 to report, don't phone 999 and waste their time as it isn't an emergency "in progress" case. You also need to report this issue to Peter Parkinson at the Bridgewater Canal Company as well as Louise Morrisey, the director of Peel Land and Planning. Hope this helps Liam
  20. It's been there for about 2 years but was regularly visited by the owner. Its had a couple of enforcement notices on it and I reported it last week as it looked a bit low. Unfortunately in passing yesterday saw it has gone under.
  21. This is probably your best bet, if they are wasps. Don't under estimate wasps, I inadvertently put a keb into a wasps nest a couple of years ago at Great Haywood, they were out like lightning and all over me. I got stung many times and it wasn't pleasant. This is probably your best bet, if they are wasps. 22. That's nearly 9 metric ton, a fair amount of extra ballast unless of course its a sailaway sort of boat.
  23. Carl Tickle can do the work for you in the fully heated shed at Hesfords
  24. Peel are currently looking at the possibility of putting a barrier across "Castlefield Marina" so only permanent moorers will be able to access it. All visitor moorings will now be round the other side in the Staffordshire arm outside the Y Club.
  25. No dock should hold 2 inches of water in the bottom. Once you've finished power washing the boat, use it on the dock floor to blow away all the mud and silt and it should dry out nicely.
