  1. I quite agree, if it was a semi permanant install that's exactly how I'd do it.
  2. Yes, just use the main terminals. A shunt is just a big ass resistor, all you need to do is measure voltage across the resistor and apply ohms law, amps = volts(your measurement)/ohms(resistance of your shunt).
  3. Thank you, I'd just found the same thing 😁
  4. Yup thats a fair point. I suppose it also acts as a 'you've left the ignition on' reminder too... And the buzzer would go off. Buzzer will go off on oil pressure failure, charge failure or overheat. Ooooh thats a good shout!!!
  5. OK the back ground is that a good friend has a buzzer which goes off in the event of oil pressure loss, charging loss or over heating. Its really annoys him that the buzzer goes off when he's starting the engine. So I figured it would be easy to only have the buzzer active when the engine was actually running. But being a mechanical diesel there are no electronics to take a 'running' feed from so now I'm a little stumped....
  6. I'm trying to think of a way to detect if a mechanical diesel engine is running, originally I was just going to use the alternator output but that would rely on the alternator working and belt intact and not slipping. Ideally needs to be robust and reliable. I did think about putting a hall sensor on the flywheel but wondered if there was simpler solution?? Thanks Dave Edit Also thought about a VR sensor on the flywheel which could be triggered by the teeth but that would require more complex driver circuitry...
  7. It would all depend what type of VPN is being used, different types use different ports, some of which can't be blocked. Ok to be accurate you could block them but websites then wouldn't load... I often use SSL VPN as it gets round VPN blocks...
  8. Crikey! How much gas does the thing use?!
  9. More of this would be amazing (the chasing down not the riding)
  10. I take it you mean 4mm². If so that's right on the borderline for exactly 1m of cable. Personally I would always over spec it, I think you'll be surprised at the difference.
  11. Hmmm I don't remember them having an online shop, if that's still the case then it's a bit difficult to compare prices... For me Bimble are pretty damn good, yes you can buy slightly cheaper but you won't get a warranty...
  12. Hmmm how to save some money... Stop sh*t blue signs on everything, stop handing yourself huge bonuses for talking BS...
  13. Speak to Lancashire Rotating Electronics, very knowledgeably & very keen pricing.
  14. Have a look at 'Bondseal industrial adhesive' Edit: https://www.tanksrus.co.uk/product/bondseal-industrial-adhesive
  15. Never owned one but heard good things about IndelB fridges.
  16. Admittedly I didn't have chance to study it in detail but I believe it was welded to the casing.
  17. That's a good point; yes, but there's not.much you can do about the situation. But you are using diesel for propulsion and charging not just charging so the efficiency changes somewhat... I've fitted a cold air feed to my alternator which seems to help although I've never taken any measurements. A few years ago I saw an alternator that had a 5 or 6 turns of stainless pipe around it with water pumped through (boat was raw water cooled anyway) I rather liked that as a solution and the pipe work was beautifully done...
  18. For the engine coolant pump, yes, that's where I got one a few years ago. Or have a look at the link, the last one I rebuilt and listed all the parts required...

  20. Outboards are usually set up to move small boats quickly not large boats slowly, I'd have thought you'd need to change the prop on it, but to what I don't know.... perhaps a 4 blade prob, have a word with the manufacturer see if they do a high torque prop...
  21. That would depend on the size of the speed sign. A little signs is a reminder of the speed limit, a big sign is a change in speed limit.
  22. I wouldn't even consider it as a tender. If you want to use it on any waterway you will need a licence and insurance.
  23. We've been a number of times in campervans, we looked at hiring one a few years ago, the companies I enquired with were fully booked months and months in advance, I fear you may have left it a little late... All the hire companies know exactly which weekend it is and hiked the price considerably! Also don't forget about borrowig/hiring a caravan or trailer tent as pong as your car can tow it! Remember, no glass bottles on site, I remember them taking a glass bottle of ketchup out of our fridge one year!!
  24. If the router is left on then the IP Address won't change that often.
  25. @Gordon M PM Sent.
