  1. At this time of year also bear in mind that, if there is very heavy or prolonged rain, the Wey can go into flood conditions - and close to navigation - within about 48 hours. Whereas with that stretch of the Thames you would expect to get a bit more notice.
  2. Have you checked to see if it could be craned out at Parvis Wharf? That's only a mile from Pyrford, with no locks, and you wouldn't need to worry about the Thames at all.
  3. At 30:58, some of the buildings may be long gone, but I think the one behind the hand-operated crane, and the crane itself, are still there.

    NABO?

I agree that they may be trying to implement a rule that they are not entitled to do. But my interpretation is that they are only doing so to gain an additional way of tackling the CMer issue. And in view of: I would rather have them implement such a rule via T&Cs than insist on HMs only ever stopping overnight - which they are legally entitled to do. If we insist of them following some aspects of legislation, even where they think they are unhelpful, we can't then complain if they also follow others that we quite like them to conveniently ignore!
  5. The boat appears to be named "East Hill No 2". As is this one: https://www.east-hill-mill.co.uk/nb-east-hill/
  6. A typical "standard" bath uses about 80-100 litres of water, at around 40-45 degrees. If your hot water is at 80ish, then even if your cold tank is near freezing a roughly 50/50 hot/cold mix is okay, so you would need around 40-45litres of hot.
  7. Well it could be achieved by something like 3,000,000 people walking or cycling a short bit of towpath every on their way to/from work, or at lunchtime. Once you add daily usage by some retired people, and families at weekends, the number needed would be rather lower. So it doesn't seem impossible.
  8. Prices of both fluctuate according to supply and demand, so are probably related to some extent. House prices go up, people find renting/buying difficult, some look to buy a boat as cheap accommodation, boat prices rise. House prices go down, more people can afford them, less demands for boats, boat prices fall.
  9. Definitely. I hate it when the chocolate goes all sticky ?
  10. It would be a rather poor system it is allowed you to book more than one passage in a given direction in a timeframe that you not allow you to get back there again. Just book 5 intervening return passages as well, even though you don't intend to use them! ?
  11. The shed owner is taking a risk that someone loses control of their boat, or is drunk or in a strong wind, and accidentally rams the jetty! ?
  12. Do you have a reason for wanting the woodburner on the right/starboard side? Since you pass oncoming boats port-to-port, a chimney on that side is more likely to come into conflict with low arch bridges/tunnels, or overhanging vegetation. Is a washer really necessary on a holiday boat?
  13. This is the critical point. More work (for boaters, and for either paid staff or volunteers) but a less efficient system. My guess is that they allow an hour's transit time, so only take bookings in any one direction at 2-hour intervals. Anyone just mising their booked slot, or turning up on spec, may now have to wait 2 hours, when previously the typical wait might have been 90 minutes. Do they let any waiting boats go "early" once they know it is clear?
  14. Seee https://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/surrey-news/environment-agency-drafts-enforcement-team-19064632 These are the same people who handled the Tesco Reading site, so it will be interesting to see if they are as effective here. And if they are, it may of course just move the problem elsewhere (again!) Good to see that 24 hours moorings will still generally be free, even if some new charges for longer stays will now apply.
  15. If people are prepared to volunteer their free time to do stuff like clear rubbish from the canal, encourage (or even shame) towpath users and boaters into better behaviour, or assist someone in need I don't have a problem with it. It can be a thankless task and they probably have to be a bit thick-skinned to ignore some of the flak they will undoubtedly receive. But it can go wrong if they start to believe that they have any sort of enforcement powers. particularly if/when they are ignored.
  16. I'm confused by this comment. The figures above (£3.4m income, £3.9mcosts) appear to come from the 2018/19 accounts. The next accounts, for 2019/20, haven't yet been published (or not to the Companies House website), so I don't see how they can be "not quoted at all ..."? Since C&RT is technically a charity, I think their accounts have to show the "cost of fund raising activties".
  17. Did you ask about Wales in general, or specifically the place you had booked? And was that in a part of Wales that is in lockdown? If it was to a part of Wales where where travel is still permitted, then the answer you got is not surprising
  18. It is almost certainly "on the market" (or soon will be) as the insolvency practioner has a duty to achieve the best possible price, in order to repay as much as possible to the bank. But they may only advertise it in trade / business press outlets. You could always get in touch with them directly (address in the Co House link above).
  19. One issue is that it isn't really much of a job. I wonder if they could just abandon booking completely and have a rule like "entry northbound only between 00 and 10 minutes past even hours; southbound only between 00 and 10 minutes past odd hours", and controlled by traffic lights? That would accommodate say 10 boats at minute intervals. How often would capacity be exceeded? Or did they used to do something like this and there were problems? Safety advice is perhaps better made available via websites, or directly by hire companies, supplemented by volunteers if onsite.
  20. I look on C&RT as somewhat akin to the National Trust. Both preserve assets for access by the public, but also charge for access/ services, have plenty of employees, and struggle to raise enough money to fund everything they would like to do ...
  21. There are plenty of companies which satisfy that definition but are not charities. To be a charity a company must also solely meet one of more of 13 purposes set out in the Charities Act, and be 'for the public benefit'. What is the 'normally accepted sense' ?
  22. In 14 seconds he travels 57ft plus the length of his boat. Alternatively he takes about 8 seconds to go 57ft (until his bow passes the stern). So nearer 5mph
  23. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  24. That's a bit drastic - I usually just get rid of the contents. ?
  25. Don't mount a powerful magnet anywhere near where you might want to put down a phone / laptop / tablet / watch or anything else with electronics in it!
