  1. I was given a string of tiny LED lights. They are in a long plastic strap, which can be stuck around the cabin top or under the gunwales with double sided tape. There is a controller which changes the brightness and colour from white to red to blue to pink to purple and green. Quite cheap I believe on e bay.
  2. Been up the HNC several times for a jolly, but you can only go as far as lock 32E unless you have booked passage through Standedge. Fibreglass and petrol powered are not allowed to transit the tunnel, both of which apply to me. I have been through the tunnel when I owned a steel narrowboat, and I found it a cold, and wet miserable experience,so I don't think I am missing much.
  3. That would cause quite a stir on the Huddersfield Narrow as it is. Would need not only cutting in half, but also slicing down the middle.
  4. Once saw an advert for a narrowboat which pictured one of these devices on the inside of the baseplate showing a reading of 11mm. It didn't say what the original steel thickness was,but I was sceptical. Some boats do have thick baseplates, there is one moored here,a Polish built one that the owner tells me was built with a 13mm baseplate. Plenty of meat there for rust to go at.
  5. Even taking errors into account,It looks a worthwhile buy for when buying a boat you will get a rough idea if the boat is worth paying for a lift out/dry dock for a full survey. I do realise that not every boat will have easy access to the inside of the baseplate, but if the probe will work underwater, running it just below the waterline would be helpful.

  7. How far to the next charging point?

  9. I'm not having another electric boat,ever.!!!
  10. Nice to see you are feeling better.?
  11. Have you tried to source the smoke as suggested in post #2? If it is not a leaking exhaust pipe or a joint at the heater or the joint onto the hull fitting, then suspect a cracked heat exchanger. With constant expansion and contraction with use,the metal eventually fatigues and cracks. If it is cracked I would expect fumes to be blown out of the hot air outlet into the cabin. Some careful detective work needed.
  12. Not canned sprayfoam.Tried that on my boat, and spraying it on horizontal undersurfaces,it just drops off.
  13. If this is serious, then I don't think it is practical. The towpaths are too rough, soft and muddy in the wet mainly too narrow. I think it would be better to simply make a suitable harness and pull by human power. The hard bit is to initially get the boat moving. This may be the future of canal boating, for when we are all electric, and run out of juice miles from a charging point, then we have to either sit tight and wait for the sun to recharge the batteries,or pick up thy harness and walk.

  15. Some interesting photos.Would be quite dodgy at motorway speeds. But I suppose desperate times spawned desperate measures.
  16. That's true Peter, but it's the initial price of electric cars that those of us of modest means can't run to. My present car (petrol) is getting rather "crabby"and I have looked at the price of even a used electric car and I can't justify spending a chunk of my kid's inheritance on one.
  17. During WW2,I was told (but don't know if was true) that private cars used to run on domestic gas. They apparently had a dirty great inflatable mattress on the roof, and used to inflate them with gas from home. If hydrogen was much cheaper,it could be a "greener"and simpler way to cut emissions.
  18. I use a squeeze bulb pump to transfer fuel from a jerrycan to the tank. (I assume that is what is called a jiggle pump) Even with a large funnel,I manage to get fuel splashes. You must have a steadier hand than me. As for the pump and pipes dripping,I put them in the outboard well to dry out. It's petrol,so soon evaporates.

  21. Yes,me too.I can now smell cigarette smoke at 100 yards. Thankfully it doesn't make me want to smoke ,but walking through a town centre the smell of cigarette smoke is sometimes quite overpowering.
  22. Find a partner with the same problem. Then read Kama Sutra to find intimate positions that don't involve face to face contact.?

  24. Aquired an old book on converting lifeboats, and came across terms I have not heard before. Hogging, garboard, rose on,joggling, lag bolts, keelson, shaft log,eye sweet shear and other old boatbuilding terms. A very interesting read.
  25. I viewed one with a really full and stinky toilet. I left quickly. If the owner can't be bothered to empty the casette,I can't be bothered to look at the boat.
