  1. Just had a quick look in the latest Waterways World mag & noticed in the article on Crick 'show boats' a couple feature induction hobs in the galley that 'run' off a 13amp 230volt plug. The favourite NB has a meaty looking electric system to look after things but I was wondering if anyone Knows how much juice an induction hob draws & are all induction hobs the same?.
  2. My experience of 'Sods Law' & boating means if anything can fail at the worst possible moment, it will
  3. Has anyone actually spoken to the people onboard the boat & got the real story?
  4. So is there a definitive distance one must move to qualify as a Constant Cruiser now?
  5. I've just checked & YES we have used this exact product 'Ametech RESTORE Oil Engine Restorer & Lubricant ', only because there was a tin lying around. I chucked it into my 2013 1.9 Vivaro van which has 130000 miles on the clock prior to it's last MOT which it, somewhat miraculously, passed with flying colours. I have no-idea if the additive helped with the test but the engine is a lot less smoky and seems quieter. than I remember it.
  6. Careful planning on size & type of boat is a good start, if going for a NB consider fitting extra water tank capacity and not having pump-out but cassette toilet instead. You can always buy extra cassettes but when the waste needs a pump out there's no option but to join the que & you have to pay for the privilege ?. FB london boaters will point you in the right direction but beware it's not a cheap option.
  7. Regarding displaying the name of the boat. It's my understanding that the Thames Authority require all vessels to display the Name and Reg' number clearly on the vessel.
  8. No problem, Kildwick ceased trading due to a divorce. Contact https://strumpetandtrollop.com/ They'll sort you out no worries.?
  9. The same way they knew about roses and castles I guess ?
  10. If, like me, you have been involved in boats & boating for many years then I feel there is a general increase in 'loutish' behavior. However, having been involved in Boat Clubs in the early 80's drinking and boating were synonymous with enjoyment. There's a huge difference between the canals, especially the narrow ones & the wider rivers, estuary & sea where basic knowledge seamanship is a prerequisite. So it's not just you ?
  11. Ha, I'm reliably informed I'm a senile old git and it's canalplan.org . I hate getting old
  12. Am I going mad? the other day I was on the Jim Shead excellent website and used a trip planner to map out my forthcoming journey now I cannot find the route planner. Please can someone point me to the elusive web page(s).

  14. I thought 'Universal Credit' was a benefit paid to those in the UK who qualified for whatever reason, I didn't realise the amount paid out depended on where you lived!
  15. Yes a bit overkill and sods law dictates that I would probably close it then forget to open it again and complain that the burner won't light ? BUT I'm sorely tempted to buy it just in case I ever need it.
  16. Does anyone moor or know the Shropshire Union Canal (Middlewich Branch) down towards the junction with the main canal at Barbridge. I'm looking for general info as to general levels of security for unattended boats etc.
  17. Thank you for all the suggestions, I have ordered 4 different solutions & just remembered I actually have an old brass mushroom vent in my shed. I'm not too worried about water ingress whilst in locks as I've never really had problems with water coming in open portholes & now I know to be wary of this situation occurring I'll carefully monitor the air intake vents.
  18. Thats the kind of thing but I'd really like just a round 'vent' as I have some nice brass cowles kicking around that will keep the rain out ?
  19. Yes that's basically it Again yes the burner is 'room-sealed' air is drawn in from outside & exits up the flue. I don't really want to have a pipe all the way up to a mushroom vent on the roof.
  20. I am looking to connect a flexible 4" diameter stainless flexi pipe from my burner air-intake to the steel cabin side but cannot find a simple solution. I'm not worried about the external cowl/rain-deflector side of things just a simple way of connecting said pipe to the cabin side. I'm suffering brain-freeze, please help .
  21. What size stilson wrench do you use? I only carry a small one on board but I'd rather be prepared for all eventualities.
  22. I owned a Broom 30 on the Great Ouse. Single engine but no problem with the occasional hop across to Boston or down to Yarmouth and the Broads. Cracking boat & great layout for living aboard but not really suited for the narrow canals in my opinion. If I were to be looking for another one & were thinking of cruising the Thames or any other tidal systems I would only consider twin engines.
  23. I used to always fit them on various 'Travel Vans' I built. AS mentioned already great for washing mud off things but remember the more you use the more often you have to replenish.
  24. Thankyou for the link, I'm actually just in the process of re-wiring & Paypal means I can hide the cost from my wife ?
