  1. It's not all the cyclists fault. These people that walk the towpath with headphone on, blasting music into their ears so loud that passes by can also hear it. They have no idea what's coming up behind them (how ever loud the ting) and this makes them unpredictable and dangerous.
  2. I found the floating dry dock at Altham on the Leeds Liverpool was great for DIY, it's family run and the guys there are helpful also the price was the cheapest I could find in this area. It was also a novelty using a floating dock. I can PM the contact details if you wish. Worth a call...
  3. Jp3 on the bay. http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lister-JP3-generator-1945-/401379638408?hash=item5d74173c88%3Ag%3Aw-4AAOSw3IdZhykK&_trkparms=pageci%3A547ad42e-7c90-11e7-aaef-74dbd1808055%7Cparentrq%3Ac427589a15d0a991f0c1071bffffad9f%7Ciid%3A1 A good looking project. I'd take it myself if I had room and time...
  4. Could always black the base plate while it is accessible...
  5. Is there enough boats on this stretch to fill another marina? Not in my opinion. The L & L is quiet around Burnley but let's hope this brings some more boats to the area.
  6. I think like RichM said, reputation is more a tell of the (popular) experienced members. But without the post counts it can be a bit meaningless. I like to see the ratio of posts to reputation and this can help decide who the members are that the community trust. I just hope it can be returned to the mobile screen, it was here two days ago and there was no one complaining that the screen was cluttered (I think). The large areas of white space where the bigger problem if I remember... Thanks again
  7. I've done a quick edit. This is what it looked like before. Not so bad in my opinion. Thanks.
  8. I only ever use mobile. Post counts were on mobile yesterday, it only takes up abit of wasted white space anyway. 49 posts in almost a year, I need to cool it
  9. Hi So on that previous thread I asked about post counts. Mr @nicknorman says that total post counts are still visible. But they are not on my screen. Pic below... I'm using Legacy theme. Is it me doing something wrong?
  10. I may be the only one who wants this but can people's total post count be turned back on? It used to say, for example, buzzard 9,057 posts. Next to the name I liked this feature because it shows who the experienced members are, also helps to tell who the newbies are that ask one question and never return again. Thanks
  11. The stuffing box is just out of picture to the right.
  12. OK thanks for the replies. If it ever stops raining I will take a pic. This is not the only problem I have found, you should see the exhaust (what's left of it!) Pictures to follow...
  13. http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/65x13-Solar-powered-widebeam-house-boat-/362044595848?hash=item544b8a1e88%3Ag%3AckYAAOSwpmBZcfgT&_trkparms=pageci%3A50f2d9be-72b1-11e7-a965-74dbd1804f2c%7Cparentrq%3A83764ee815d0abc1e14c2fe5fff6fe2c%7Ciid%3A4 What about this one. I'm not a technical whizz but others here may be able to make sense of the description.
  14. I think you misunderstood. It is not the stern tube greaser that is cracked. It is the actual stern tube with the propeller shaft running through. I have never replaced a stern tube but I imagine it is a bigger job than you imply. Firstly the boat would need dry docking, then prop shaft removing, faulty stern tube removing and a replacement fitted. Not a job that I can see being tackled in the water???
  15. Hi. So yesterday I got the job of filling the stern tube greaser on my mates boat. Job done, I gave it a couple of turns, which is when I noticed that grease is being force out of what looks like a crack in the brass stern tube. He says he's never noticed it before but he is very laid back when it comes to maintenance. I've suggested wrapping it in Denso tape and putting a jubilee clip on as a temporary fix until he can get something sorted (which could be never). So this has got me thinking, what could have caused the crack? Is this so serious that it needs fixing right away? Has anyone had/seen this problem? Thanks in advance.
  16. Why not take your 'home mooring' up north. For example the Leeds Liverpool where prices are low, then continue to do as you suggest. It doesn't even need to be a marina. Get your self an even cheaper private linear mooring.
  17. There is always someone who will buy an old project boat, patch it up and keep it going. Is it possible to over-plate an already over-plated boat? Or is it really time to scrap when a boat gets to this stage?
  18. Not the nicest of tasks to have to do but looks like you have made a good job of it. I recently tackled mine but decided to go all-out and removed the engine, batteries, fuel tank and the lot. I did try with the engine in but there were too many spots i just couldn't get at. One thing to remember is to do the underside of the decks that are welded in. I've seen a few where the engine bay looks spotless but the underside of the decks are bubbling and covered in flaky rust. Anyway nice job...
  19. By my count, you have 7 locks at Johnston's, and then 6 through Blackburn ( not that many really). And only 3 swing bridges, also 1 tunnel. A nice stretch from Clayton to Readly which will be easygoing (apart from all the shopping carts and bicycles that are lurking beneath... especially on the burnley mile ). Please don't be to worried about using the boat, and try get out of the marina as much as possible! I've seen 3 or 4 new builds go into Readly in the past few months and several over the years and alot of them never move again. There seems to be a thing about marinas, in my opinion, where boats take root and owners have no interest in going for a sail. Get settled in and comfortable with the boat, then go for a cruise to Bingley for a few weeks (great scenery, pubs, people... the list goes on) and enjoy the waterways. This gives you a real chance to do some locks and swing bridges, they just keep on coming at ya. Enjoy you new 'home' but remember to get out there and explore! good luck
  20. I'm interested in the condition you find the car after 6 months of storage. Do you get someone to look after or maintain it? Last time I left a car for that amount of time there was a list of problems; flat battery, flat tyres (not slashed or anything like that), seized brakes and slight mould on seats (due to lack of fresh air). Was a fairly new car aswell, cars like to be driven and loved.
  21. I added this stuff to my paint before painting decks. Just mix into paint before brushing it on. http://www.tcschandlery.co.uk/mobile/international-non-slip-additive-20g/p13064?gclid=Cj0KEQjw0IvIBRDF0Yzq4qGE4IwBEiQATMQlMb2UgyZmRjliRxVU02Gi-IDDOmdLr3QVyAukYfZp7kkaAic18P8HAQ Have a search around you might find it cheaper. Try your local paint store.
  22. That's enough to over plate a 50 footer, up north. Where the boat is located. You will get it for half that in a yard I have used on the Leeds Liverpool.
  23. FENDERS DOWN!!! not this one again....
