  1. Oven ping.... oven that goes ping. But it sounds great
  2. Ours is very similar to this one. It holds so much stuff.... brilliant
  3. I love ours.... we fit all sorts of stuff in it. ill get a photo this weeken
  4. Must say, I was on the Bridgewater last year, dreading being accosted by Sonny after what I have read on this forum. Then it happened, a knock on the boat...... the one who must be obeyed just said - be nice. I was and so was he. We had a good 10 minute chat, he told me the rules, gave me a business card and told us to give him a call if there is any issues. I came away from that meeting with him thinking WTF. I had expected the son of Satan to be ripping my throat out and feeding it to his evil hounds. I suppose if I had gone and greeted him aggressively it would have been different. Im very much the same - talk to me and Im a nice fella to know, talk at me and im a bar steward, be aggressive towards me and your next thought will be - "how did i end up down here?" closely followed by "O that hurt!" I think we have all met people on the cut who are great people but we will all have met people on the cut who are a confrontational and aggressive for the hell of it. I suppose if you are having conversations with the later 4 or 5 times a week, even if the other 50 are great people, you will approach each boat any boat with trepidation. All I can say is that it worked for me and once they open Wigan Flight and I will no doubt be having a 10 minute conversation with him again... maybe even make him a brew (i know.... radical thinking, hey)
  5. A lot of drinkers and a few dealers but we have never had a problem with them as long as you talk to them. the only problems we have had is during kick out times at the local borstals (schools). Little shoots they are. I also wouldnt like to stop overnight
  6. We have just got back from a quick trip to Riley Green. The Boat Yard (Pub) is almost ashes, which is a shame because it did some good grub. As you get to the top of Johnston Locks there is water, elsan, pump out and shower - all clean and looked after. Unfortunately the pub opposite is shut at the moment. Its about 30 - 40 mins to Riley Green from there. I cant remember bridge numbers but I would suggest that going under the motorway and mooring just before the next bridge. There are good moorings next to the pub but it does smell a bit like a few day old wet fire at the moment, so we just moored before the bridge. Rishton is easily reachable from there the next day and we have stayed there a couple of times without any problems but if you want to carry on a little further then we have moored past Clayton-le-Moors (just past the pipe bridge) a few times. This is far more rural. Doing this will give you a good run for the next day which we usually have a long(ish) day to get through Barrowford locks and you can moor before the tunnel. This leaves you with a morning transit through the tunnel. We have gone through the tunnel and carried onto a place called Salterford, which has a great little pub with some good food, after doing the locks, but that makes for quite a long day. During the day, there is a handy Morrisons with its own mooring in Nelson, you just need a BW key to get into the car park. The proviso on all these timings is - that it depends on what you pick up along the way.... my tally on the Riston to Barrowford leg has been 1 mattress, a welly, a walking boot, a traffic cone, a hessian sack and a shop full of plastic bags. Ive heared some people complain about the run between Blackburn and Burnley. That it is industrial and run down..... I quite like it because it gives you a good idea why they built these canals in the first place - to move things to and from these run down places. Im sorry I have not given any bridge numbers or any useful information like that, but I dont have my guide with me!!!! Enjoy the run..... the other side of the tunnel is just spectacular. You will love 'the twisties'
  7. Sewage was always a good place to get a hair cut, a magic trick and robbed!! One transit I remember was being in the ER and being sand blasted via the ER fans whilst we were in a sand storm. Took weeks to get the stuff out from under my skin. We didnt need anti flash this and that, the only thing the Merchant had to worry about was the amount of bum boats around. Sadly, the Suez Circus with the barber, the magician, the tailor, the bits and bats guy and the girls stopped some time ago Either Suez or Panama is a good way to loose weight if you are an Engineer & a good chance for a bronzy if you are a star gazer
  8. When going down hill, I am often happy that I have a Stern Fender. We are on the L&L and my boat is max length (60 ft). To open the lock gates i often have to back up to the cill before the gate will swing. Having a Stern Fender stops me damaging the boat or the cill. Wouldnt be without one !
  9. Carpet.... finally recovered Hat .... not recovered Fenders Paint Skin whilst removing bits from the prop
  10. I suspect that anything over 900w will kill the genny because of the starting load. I can run at a slight overload on start up - for instance my chop saw flick the overload LED on for a fraction of a second on start and that runs OK, thats 1500w on a standard motor.
  11. Has anyone got any idea if there is a pressure washer out their that will run on a 2.2Kw portable generator? It obviously wont be powerful, but it will make life a lot easier. My idea it to set up a header tank (Wheelie bin!) with a head of about 5 ft. This will be filled via a submersible pump from the cut. The idea works but I cant find a suitable pressure washer
  12. Tizzy The houses are at the end of the branch, by the winding hole. The Indian is straight up the hill into Tarleton
  13. From the CRT T&C's " 5. Boat Safety and Insurance 5.1 The Boat must comply with the Boat Safety Scheme requirements (set out in Schedule 1 below) at all times. 5.2 You must have in force an insurance policy for the Boat, provided by a company that is authorised and regulated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority, which covers third-party liabilities of at least two million pounds. The insurance cover must be maintained for the full duration of the Licence." Schedule 1# "BOAT SAFETY: STANDARDS FOR CONSTRUCTION AND EQUIPMENT There is a legal requirement for boats to comply with the Trust’s standards for construction and equipment (appended). You are responsible for making sure that the Boat is maintained so that it complies with the required standards at all times. To protect the safety of all our customers, we may operate a spot check on the fuel, gas and electrical installations on board any boat which we have reason to believe no longer meets the required standards. If we believe the Boat is dangerous, we may terminate your Licence and you will have to remove it from the Waterways. If you fail to remove the Boat from our Waterways, we can do so at your expense. When applying for a boat licence, you must produce evidence that the Boat meets these standards. Acceptable evidence is one of the following:  confirmation that the Boat complies with Boat Safety Scheme standards. This must be appropriate for the purpose for which the Boat is used. Please remember that any alterations, modifications or a lack of good maintenance may mean that the evidence of compliance is no longer valid.  a current Declaration of Conformity with the EU Recreational Craft Directive which shows the specification of the Boat. This declaration must be less than four years old (one year for ‘sailaways’).  In respect of boaters who have completed the CRT form declaring an exemption from the Boat Safety Scheme standards, we may from time to time carry out random checks and we reserve the right to inspect the Boat and/or to require further evidence or information from such boaters to validate that the exemption applies. When renewing your Licence, the reminder we send you shows the issue and expiry date of the evidence that we currently hold for the Boat. If the evidence is still valid, you do not need to enclose it with your licence application. But if the evidence has expired, you must enclose new evidence of compliance with your application." Hope that helps a bit !! here are the T&C's you sign up to https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/media/library/5962.pdf
  14. We were there in November last year. The advise I would give is that once you have come through the last swing bridge before the locks..... look for the Winding Hole sign and turn in it. If you slightly miss it then go back a bit until you can hit it. We missed it by about 10 foot and it took about 1.5 hrs to wind !! We are 60ft and managed. Just a warning when you are doing the Rufford branch..... there is a section that you think it was built for swamp buggies - its a fantastic run but i wish i had realised how rustic that section of the canal was. The boss did ask me at one point if I had taken a wrong turn. There are some decent moorings in front of the new houses and if you fancy an Indian takeaway then a 10 min walk up the road will reward you with a great little Indian.

  16. Got it, looked at it, didnt click it, @@@@ it.
  17. Being moored near Adlington on the L&L we have a nice stretch that we can run out on for a day and stay overnight somewhere to return the next day - great weekend cruising. The problem we have is that one way we have got to go through Wigan Flight and the weekend would involve - down the flight on Saturday, stay over in Wigan , then back up the flight on Sunday. If we want some locks we will go up through Johnson Fold locks up to (say) Riley Green for the night then back on Sunday. In the last 12 months we have been to Skipton and back and we also had plans to go to Liverpool, but ended up going up the Rufford branch to Tarlton and back. We plan to go to Liverpool this year or maybe through to Manchester. We try and use the boat as often as we are not working (weekends and holidays) and not just sit on it on the mooring. The thing moves, so we try to move it as often as possible.
  18. Mail starts off 'Thank you for purchasing a long term boat license. Two copies of this are printed below. Please fix one on each side of your boat so it can be clearly seen from the outside' So although it is not in legalease, it is generally covered in 7.1 of the T&C 7.1 you must display the boats name, index number and the license on both sides of your boat so that they are always easily visible by our employees on the towpath or waterway. Im not a legal beagle but you accept the terms and conditions when you pay for your license and that includes the inference. let the tow path lawyers begin !!
  19. Just an obvious question and one that you have already thought about but........ W hen you tested your PC 1.at home 2. on the boat 3. in the office, did you use the same monitor. If not then I would hook the monitor up to another PC that you know is working and check that.
  20. Renewed mine this month. PDF and Email but not in the post. I cant remember if I had to ask for one though. Painless and quick, I thought
  21. That sounds like a good idea. only one problem........ the air tight lid goes on with 'hot air inside' the ash cools down which creates a great little vacuum inside the said container. A good old hammer and chisel would take the top off, but would it be worth it. There is also another problem and that is that you would have to monitor the temp inside the box because you would have to know that the thing wont 'flash' once the oxygen is re-introduced. Eye brow warning there me thinks!
  22. Ive just bought some cheap Astro-Turf and fixed a thin strip along the mooring. I cut it down to strips of about 12" and used a staple gun to fix. It works a treat - no ice and not slippy when wet.
  23. I am going to ask a stupid question in a min...... Just before I do, let me give a little background.... I have recently felt quite a 'notching' at almost dead ahead when moving the tiller. The rudder stock has been 'a bit wobbly' since we purchased the boat 12 months ago and has not caused us any issues. Below is a very bad example of what I can see. Ok.... now for the stupid bit..... I cant see how to get to the top bearing without removing everything (tiller and top cover) and (here we go) Im not sure if I remove the top rudder stock bolt (connecting the tiller) and top cover bolts if Im going to have to go fishing for a rudder!! I suppose the question is - is this an out of the water task?
  24. I wonder what happens to the rudder at the 'non driving' end of the boat? you wouldnt want that flapping about at the front. It also looks like it could be hydraulic steering.... interesting! You could make a great boat out of this one.
  25. Only been on the cut for 12 months and have managed to stay out, although a trip up Wigan flight and then to our mooring the other week left me feeling that I would have been dryer if I had swam after the boat. Just wondering how long being in the club will be possible?!? I have been in the drink twice (not by choice), once when I was inspecting the drench system on a lifeboat whilst we ran her for an hour when waiting for a berth in Singapore and once 'stepping' from a pilot ladder onto a pilot boat that had suddenly disappeared with the bottom of the pilot ladder in Klaipeda. One thing you do learn is that a life jacket is great for keeping you afloat in the water but really doesnt help when trying to get back onto a boat. In the lifeboat incident, everyone had great fun in telling me that they were going to push me under the water so the buoyancy pushes me up. After several p**s taking attempts and lots of laughter (others not me!!), I had a sudden case sense of humour failure, threatened to do unspeakable things to the next person that 'bobbed' me under, took of my life jacket, climbed back in the boat and exacted my revenge. Klaipeda was even less fun and very, very scary - pilot boat lost sight and backed off until he could see me (good boy) and the nearly 250,000 tonne tanker steered into me, therefore taking the bloody big fish food maker away. Scary stuff and very, very lucky
