  1. My advice from C&RT was that if there is no boat, and no marker identifying the mooring as occupied, then use it as the visitor mooring it is. It is only a winter mooring when someone hires it as such. Rog
  2. Perhaps you could enquire locally Rog
  3. I made enquiries at the Stop House in Braunston regarding areas designated as winter moorings. I was assured that unoccupied moorings were available to be used as normal visitor moorings. Rog
  4. Weakened yesterday and lit it. Absolutely razzing during the evening and could barely sleep last night ! It's burnt out now and staying out. I'll put a jumper on Rog Being a northener, it's the waste of a match that bothers me
  5. Thanks for all the information. I have my boat blacked every two years. The boat is 23 years old and the steel is in pretty good order. It was blacked two weeks ago, and whilst out of the water I had a good look at the base plate. It appeared in good order with no obvious signs of rust, despite never having been blacked. I was concerned that I was missing out on some basic maintenance, but it would appear it's very much a "make your own mind up" situation. Mine is a 12v boat, and cruising mostly so rarely plugged into the mains. If it was moored in a marina or similar with boats all on mains power, would this increase the risks of excessive corrosion ? Perhaps I ought to start a new thread for this question but hey.....I'll risk the wrath of the mods Rog
  6. We live on boats. Why would we be surprised to find that a moored boat runs it's engine at some point between 8am and 8pm ? Rog
  7. I generally give my engine an hour after 6pm, particularly as the nights get colder (unless I've been cruising all day). I like to think it gives the batteries a top up, heats the water a little for morning use, and puts some warmth in the engine bay to assist (as winter draws on) with preventing any freezing. (Yes I know it's too early yet) Besides, how are we to know when , between the hours of 8am and 8pm, is best going go suit you and anyone esle in the vicinity ? I cannot see how this can be considered unreasonable or even worthy of query. Rog
  8. Cake is the only reason I run. Oh and beer and chips oh and chocolate, loads of chocolate and.... forget it Rog
  9. If you keep baking those cakes you won't need the fire, the oven will keep you warm. Mind you , you may get loads of visitors Rog
  10. Can I ask a stupid question please. Bearing in mind the depth of most canal's, is it worthwhile blacking the base plate ? Additionally I was told the base plate is not usually blacked as there is no air/water interface, the area where the damage can be done. Genuine questions thanks Rog
  11. Isn't that a bit like having air conditioning on with car windows open Rog
  12. The plastic covering off a new double mattress outside Leamington railway station. Weighed a ton with all the water in it. But the worst part by far was that it was in January. Rather cold ! Had I been wearing gauntlets I may well have cut through my hand without knowing. Don't know which was worse. The cold in the water, or the pains as my hands began to get back up to temperature. You've got to love boating Rog Having just read Mr Moore's......not such a bad job
  13. Great feeling innit. Just so you can prepare yourself, that feeling doesn't last forever...... mind you we've had our boat 11 years and it hasn't gone yet Have fun Rog (PS lots of money's gone though, but it's only money)
  14. You had to show cake when I'm moored on the south Oxford nowhere near a supplier. Evil I'd call it. I'll never sleep tonight now Rog PS It looks stunning
  15. Saw my wife up to the waist in there once. I didn't laugh. Rog
  16. "When you can take these stones from my hand it will be time for you to leave" Rog PS I'm not referring to Saturday afternoon wrestling !
  17. It's early days in C&RT's evolution. I merely suggest that it may be possible for development over time to more 'meaningful' voluntary work for those wishing to do it, and of course for those wishing to receive it. Personally someone volunteering their time to offer me help will always be welcome. Rog
  18. I was thinking more along the lines of "my boy's got a veruca and can't go swimming" Rog
  19. Get someone to write you a note saying you're excused assistance at locks Rog
  20. Maybe....just maybe, when C&RT has been around as long as WRG, we may see developments and progress. Walk first. Rog
  21. My lovely wife says that dry bicarbonate of soda in an open receptical left within the confines of the smelly area should absorb any nasty smells without introducing any new nasty smells. Works in fridges and stinky training shoes too. Rog PS must work because my wife knows everything...... so I'm told
  22. You are absolutely right, without doubt. Daft ideas Rog
  23. I didn't know you could have a bad beer shop, just some's better than t'others Rog
  24. My understanding is that the 'suspended on a wire' type hoverer is the kestrel. As Stuart Lancaster would no doubt say "It's their point of difference". PS note the topical Rugby World Cup reference Rog
  25. Beautiful........ and if hovering, almost certainly a kestrel. Rog
