  1. Actually, isn't Barnton a timed access tunnel? One of the skippers is likely to be judged at fault ... Edited: No, it's the odd one out.
  2. Or clear horn signals! That's exactly what they are for, after all.
  3. We usually overwinter on the L&L, but are doing the Lancaster for a change. They're both lovely (mostly!) and you must visit [long list of places] because there are nice quiet moorings with great views and really pretty canalside villages and towns. Some lovely buildings and friendly people too ...
  4. You'd better check the winter stoppages list too before choosing the L&L option - commuting from Leeds won't be much quicker or more fun than from Lancaster. Crewe is a bit better, but you're only really looking at an hour difference on the Lancaster train.
  5. For what it's worth, we are overwintering on the Lancaster this year for a change, as it's a nice easy canal - only one swingbridge that needs to be operated and there's a stoppage north of that from November to March so the only bit that's not flat open water is the six locks down to Glasson Dock. It's going to be a lazy winter!
  6. If you're intending to do that, get a wiggle on. There are only 2 "up" crossings still available to book this year, and if the weather is bad they might get cancelled. Add: 30th September and 1st October are the only days left bookable online, and there are currently only 3 slots left either day. After that, the link is closed until April next year.
  7. If Darwin's theory was correct, cats should have learned to use a tin opener by now ...
  8. They have, but a lot of the others insisted on accompanying you on the boat(s) you were looking at. It makes sense that the others have started letting you look inside without following you onboard in a <2m space though.
  9. Guilty as charged. My ambition in life is to get up to gutter level at least one time! It was an ... unfortunate topic title though. I doubt it was accidental! Schoolboy humour aside, it does sound like excellent service, so thanks for posting the details. There are a lot more people come online to post complaints than to post compliments about customer service.
  10. I've seen this done with two flap valves, one either side of the Webasto, rather than a motorised valve. The water pressure opens the flaps when the Webasto pump is running, so no extra wiring needed and less to potentially go wrong. It's very important to fit the flap valves the correct way round though!
  11. As well as this, I'd be concerned that mooring with the combustion air intake against the bank would restrict it half the time the boat is moored. That would be better, especially if there are vents both sides. I still think it's the wrong thing to do on a boat for all the reasons posted above, but at least this way you won't have to weld another hole up when you remove the ducting after trying it for a few weeks.
  12. Or reverse the 1/4 (?) of a mile back to the junction assuming you want to stop at Cuckoo Wharf.
  13. I'd double check that Richard. That's what they changed a few years ago, and it was only after the change I switched to them. They were still linking to the 30 GB cap in the T&Cs, but the plan allows unlimited tethering on my contract, and I regularly use more than 100GB per month, nearly all of it tethered.
  14. Three changed the rules a couple of years ago, allowing all your data to be used for tethering (up to your limit) in either a phone or a dongle/mifi unit. Add: They also don't count the data used for streaming some internet TV services.
  15. Ah but editing and producing video is much the same as sitting on your backside watching telly, though not usually done on a mobile phone. Just ask @Laurie Booth or @WotEver how little work they do/did ... I think you upset "Tracy" by asking a sensible question that spoiled his entire rant, which was when he got his Brian mixed up with his Richard!
  16. No, there are dozens of these channels where incompetent new boaters make video of themselves doing their first lock badly. That market niche is saturated already. You could do one about looking to buy a boat, starting with looking at a cheap, knackered one and gradually increasing in value until you find the one you want. If you get enough subscribers, you could even crowdfund the extra £10,000 you were considering adding to your budget!
  17. This makes sense, adding more magnets must make an ecofan turn faster. If you take all the magnets out of the motor it doesn't go very fast at all. QED
  18. The going rate up North for a pre-purchase survey was a tenner per foot last time I got one six years ago. So a 40ft boat would be £400 regardless of asking price and a 70ft boat would be £700 regardless of asking price. Are you specifying you want a pre-purchase survey? These tend to be more detailed and more expensive than an insurance survey or a hull survey.
  19. Is that because of the quality of work or their prices? Perhaps some other reason? As others have said, they usually do a good but pricey job.
  20. Some of their kit looks very interesting, thanks for the info. https://www.chargery.com/ The DC and AC combined charger with built in cell balancing might be of interest to some people, and their off the shelf BMS looks worth investigating.
  21. Want to bet Whilton took the old boat off them as a deposit on the next boat? Probably gave them £5k for it ...
  22. For clarity, we used 2-pack not bitumen.
  23. I'll get one as soon as they are towpath / road legal - it's not worth losing my driving licence for. Some say that letting one person drive around in a tonne and a half of steel is a stupid idea. Maybe getting rid of the cars and letting the bikes and scooters take over would be a better idea! /Dons NOMEX suit and ducks ...
