  1. I was referring to the northernmost one - both these bridges are the same width.....
  2. I don't agree with this at all - this is a blind bridge, to be approached at caution, but wide enough for two boats to pass easily , something I've had to do many times over the years. Any restriction in width would cause chaos!
  3. I was referring to the main picture - the spindles have been removed.....
  4. - but it has been modernised (in this picture) - centre paddles removed........
  5. I know the copyright holders would not want to see it shared without their permission.....
  6. "The Boat People" is a very good film, if a little romanticised! It features real boaters, even if their names are changed! It would be good to see this restored and made available to all.
  7. I don't know who is responsible for maintaining this section, but the nicely cut towpath hedge puts those of many "navigable" canals to shame, CRT seems to have given up hedge cutting. (and seemingly most vegetation work......)
  8. Defo Kinver - tug "Usworth" I rather think, with "Jupiter" and "Byfield" beyond.....
  9. Takes me back, shame it's not in Smellyvision!
  10. Does anyone know what happened to the Coventry canal's Oldbury Reservoir? I can answer my own question (first paragraph) BW did that quietly! - Purley-Chase-manganese-mine-final-2.pdf (aditnow.co.uk)
  11. B W and it's successors seem quite happy to reduce the size of our waterways, I could give numerous examples where towpaths have been widened, bridges reduced in width - and tunnels(Edgbaston). I have said before that we must be the only country in Europe to do this!
  12. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/c1936-Grand-Union-Canal-Crane-Barge-Crew-Shrewley-Warwick-Area-Vintage-Photo/333757607699?hash=item4db580ef13:g:CvoAAOSwQ~Vfia3c
  13. Is that the "Chertsey" between the "Cypress" and the "Tay"?
  14. One way of dredging the canal!
  15. Impressive those Bowker and King tankers - you had to be well tied up when they went past - especially loaded! The "Ash" again with the "Comet" Close inspection of the photo will reveal it's not the "Betelgeuse".....
  16. It's the "Ash" rather than the "Betelgeuse"
  17. Hawkesbury
  18. I think the concrete roadway was laid throughout to assist in the works at the time. The summit level was lowered as well to increase headroom in the tunnel
  19. Don't recall seeing this elsewhere! Does anyone realise it's only 4ft 6" deep, most people could probably walk out..... https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/news/stoke-on-trent-news/midnight-kayakers-rescued-after-getting-4191708
  20. At Armitage on the T and M the canal was affected by subsidence from the nearby pit, hence the raised concrete banks. The powers-that-be decided the canal was too deep so tipped in material - trouble is they rather overdid it.....
  21. I well remember the Hollins Mill arm, and the demolition of the mill chimney, for which spectacle many locals turned out, on 1st October 1957 ( - having just looked it up!)
  22. Of course we mustn't forget that BTW started the trend of replacing wooden bottoms with steel...….(eg Asterope, Achilles)
