  1. Don't forget that not all of the pictures in Mrs Rolt's book are correctly captioned!
  2. Anyone seen this? - from 8.40 on http://player.bfi.org.uk/film/watch-bewdley-fireman-at-practice-1940/
  3. You could always try Parsons themselves - http://www.parsonsmathwaymarine.co.uk/manuals.htm
  4. re. Hydrus/Raven - Try Ivybridge Marine - Roger Farrington
  5. Used to have a PD2 - more recently a Lister
  6. Some recent before and after pictures of the Denebola - http://www.nationalhistoricships.org.uk/data/nrhv/vessels/1442_DENEBOLA_4_1459241322.JPG http://www.nationalhistoricships.org.uk/data/nrhv/vessels/1442_DENEBOLA_7_1459241434.JPG
  7. Hate to be pedantic, but the Z-shaped bar the tiller goes on to is called the "Rams Head", a "Swans Neck" being a piece of decorative ropework, not much good for steering with!
  8. What about Naseby and Sulby Reservoirs?
  9. I found part one very interesting, although it only covers his earlier life before his canal involvement. Interesting to read of his heroic rescuing of "Lusitania" survivors for which he received a medal. Part Two does exist, and the relevant canal parts may yet get an airing!
  10. Perhaps it wasn't obvious enough, my question re. the Towy was actually addressed to Astalweeks
  11. HA3 was fitted for use as a Zoo Bus
  12. Engine probably arrived at the Towy via Barry Lycett and John Stephenson
  13. I don't know why bearings are put in the collar and/or the skeg. Everything needs to be nice and worn and loose, so when the inevitable day comes that the rudder jumps out of the skeg either through bouncing on something on the bottom or catching on a sill, you can get it back into the cup in the skeg, even if it has got slightly bent! I would suggest that if a surveyor tells you otherwise, he's not had first-hand experience of dealing with such a problem! (That's opened a can of worms..........!)
  14. To go off the subject , are you going to replace the deck and return it to it's TCO condition?
  15. Claytons finished going to Ellesmere Port in 1955 so if it was anything to do with the ship canal the boats may have lost them after that
  16. My neck hurts! Keep up the good work, it will be good when it's done!
  17. A requirement of the Ship canal when loading at Stanlow?
  18. Low levels!!! - what's it going to be like if we have a dry winter?!
  19. My brother would even be able to tell you the engine number of the Bolinder then in "Tay" in the early 1950s as he was an avid boat spotter and created a card index containing details of all the boats passing our house at the time and used to have frequent rides on them, probably including the "Tay" and "Hamble" as he would have then known the steerer, Bill Bellingham I believe at the time.
  20. I believe this was originally the "Aldebaran" GUCCC
