  1. The top gates usually seal a lot better than the bottoms due to the tops being smaller. So less lost water.
  2. Im not 100% on this but IIRC the stop control is the same as on an ST lister and the cold start is with the throttle open to pull the stop lever on the engine out from the casing(like you are trying to pull the lever off its spindle) in the run position and allow the internal spring to rotate the lever further over the lug, once the engine has started briefly pull the engine stop cable and release to reset the control or when you open the throttle in gear it will smoke somewhat.
  3. Bryco at Daventry are Lister/Petter agants and do engine reconditioning in house, or ask Rose narrowboats as they also do private work.
  4. It has no propulsion engine and when i saw it on the move earlier this month it was being poled. Its name is Orca.
  5. That looks like a power cable totem post not a mooring post.
  6. A friend of mine had an Iveco 320-32 IIRC, the park brake on that applied the trailer brakes as well, but if the trailer was air spring then loss of the resevoir air meant that the trailer brakes leaked off, if plain spring brakes then they would stay on. You could 'test' the park brake for holding on a hill by pushing the drivers park lever in and it would then travel further in the apply direction releasing the trailer brakes while the tractor spring brakes remained applied. This IIRC was something that was possible on the old 3 line brakes.
  7. Non canal but railway. Some years ago on a premier preserved railway on a Friday night a footplateman who was rostered for driving or firing the next day went to check his loco a Stanier 8F, it was fairly late and dark in the evening just before a staff member used to lock up the shed side and rear doors. The footplateman mounted the footplate steps, entered the cab and shut the steel folding 'doors' while he had a few minutes peace and quiet looking into the flames of the small fire in the firebox. He heard the rear door of the shed shut and called goodnight to Dave who was locking up, Dave replied 'goodnight mate' and then passed thro the shed side door and locked it. After a few minutes of contemplation footsteps were heard coming thro the shed alongside the 8F, the footsteps stopped and were heard to be using the cab access steps, the folding door was opened and closed with the footsteps coming into the cab. The footplateman looked up expecting to see Dave but he was alone on the footplate! Railway again. The same Dave as above. He had been in the on station bar with his wife and when it came time to lock up the messroom and shed rear/side doors went over the footbridge from platform 1 to 2. While on the footbridge he asked his wife what she could see in the yard particularly near the BR4 tank. She replied that she could see nothing out of the ordinary but the safety valves on the BR4 needed looking at as they were leaking steam which was hanging around the valves and not blowing away. The boiler of the BR4 was stone cold & drained of water as it was out of traffic! Railway yet again and its Dave again. Dave woke up one morning having had a dream that he was firing on a particular loco on a particular service. When they had had the right away and set off as the loco passed over the road bridge at the south end of the station the bridge had collapsed on top of a green Morris Minor. Dave said nothing about this. But some time later he had another dream, the same engine and service and he remembered the 1st dream so he told the driver that he would walk up to the advanced starter signal the other side of the bridge. As the loco passed over the bridge it collapsed on top of a green Morris Minor. Again Dave said nothing. Some time later again dave is up on Castle Walk in Hightown and looking down, the same loco is waiting to depart on a train. When the loco passed over the same bridge again it collapsed on top of a green Morris Minor. This added up to sufficient thoughts to get Dave to go and have a look at this bridge. The result the railways engineers were hurridly summoned and the bridge had a speed restriction slapped on it and a replacement bridge deck structure was sourced from a bridge manufacturer in a big hurry as the old bridge was almost at the point of failing.
  8. Thats the way they seal stop planks, bed leaks is usually done with clay.
  9. You can tell boat checkers from length inspectors/bank staff very easily if you look. CRT boat checkers are dressed like the enforcement officers, black jumper, white shirt and black trousers. Length inspectors are dressed in blue jumpers, blue shirt and black trousers just like the rest of the bank staff.
  10. Having read the report with the pics i would say the CRT staff member should possibly be up on a fizzer for verbal abuse of a customer and certainly for lack of customer care.
  11. The crane on the northampton are was operator error and the driver(admitted) deviating from the agreed method statement about where his wheels should be, i.e. on the stone trackway rather than the grass at the side where he put them so they sank up to the axle cases. The crane was noware near tipping(or the bank collapsing) but the tyres needed sheets underneath so it could then be driven out. This was after a long day in very high temperatures with no air con in the crane cab so the driver was rather exhausted mentally and physically.
  12. Cost? when i changed a blanking plate for a filter all that was required was unscrew the blanking plate and screw on a filter element.
  13. Apparently the lads finished the job at 1030 last night. The dredger had to be transported by road from Norton Junction and the lorry had to be hired in as Tuckies did not have an available lorry to do the job.
  14. It has only recently been weighted open with no lock, up to approx 1 1/2yrs ago it was weighted down. The o/s approach wall on the north side has been very poor with the end missing for some time and to repair it would involve dewatering due to missing brickwork below water level.
  15. Make an official written complaint to CRT as its a user/public safety issue.
  16. Fountains are the vegetation contractor, but some bits are probably subbed out to other contractors. I think that Milton Keynes for example is cut to a higher standard than the norm as sustrans or MK council pay for the extra cuts.
  17. When ever i have opened that bridge(last time 2 days ago) the method is pull hard on the chain and keep it moving, if it stops it will take over in the closing direction and you will have to start again. Calls for more counterweight are wrong as adding much will result in the deck not landing fully.
  18. Micro vee belt? do you mean poly vee as per the link or a small vee belt? Assuming the belt and pullies are not worn i would say that the problem is lack of belt tension possibly combined with insufficient wrap on the alternator pulley.
  19. I had to repack the stern gland many years ago on an old icebreaker called Tardebigg. New rings fitted and tightened up and no leak, run prop and when the prop stopped it was leaking again. Adding more packing cured it till the prop was run again which started the leak again. The problem was that the bearing/shaft was so worn that the packing was passing thro the bearing and out into the water. Grease just disappeared when screwing the greaser down. New shaft and tube required.
  20. Yes a filter will replace a plate, in fact i did it on an ST2(same fitting) in a work boat and on another work boat i fitted the plate to replace the filter as on that one the engine bed was just foul of the filter body. The engine vibrations were enough for the can to tap the engine bed and work harden/crack the can resulting in a bilge full of black oil.
  21. That plate is also fitted to ST marine engines instead of a filter, possibly for instalations that dont have the room or access to have a removable filter.
  22. IIRC an industrial HR lister has a tin timing case and a marine HR has a cast iron timing case that can have direct bolted bits like a gearbox or hydraulic pump.
  23. No, i would end up sacked or in court for telling some of the 'users' what they are and what they should do.
