  1. Hi Sas. I'm wondering what loo it was and where the compaction problem was. We haven't purchased one yet but were intending to do so in the next month or so. Any information you can give me would be most appreciated! suze
  2. That's interesting Sas. We have a cassette and will shortly be installing a composting (drying really) loo. We have found that a cassette only lasts a couple of days (if we are lucky) and the trek to the sewage disposal places is onerous. We have three cassettes which are stored in the shower tray when not in use. Have you noticed that whenever liveaboards get together the conversation always gets round to poo and the problems of disposal?
  3. Very nice boat Sas. Pumpout or cassette?
  4. What a hugely entertaining thread. Best laugh all week.
  5. Congratulations Erin. Holly sounds beautiful and I'm sure you will be very happy with her.
  6. Don't worry about it. I have a similar problem in that I can spell and I can type but not always at the same time!
  7. That is fantastic Odana. It's exactly what I need as a studio. When we move off the tug and onto the narrowboat I will have no studio space at all and would really like to have something like your set up.
  8. My son and daughter in law travelled the Dutch and French waterways in their Dutch barge for three years. DiL worked from the boat (for a UK company)and did it all from the computer with a few trips back to UK to attend essential meetings and conferences. Son was meantime working on the boat whenever possible. DiL took a little while to get into the neccessary mindset for working from home but it worked for them. It was essential that son was supportive and understood her need for peace and quiet when working.
  9. The best photos I have seen of these beautiful sculptures.
  10. We use springs. The most common comment from people passing our boat is..."OOOOOOOHHHH, look mum. A parrot!"
  11. Has Butterber been planted on the towpaths deliberately? It seems to be taking over in some places.
  12. I'm sorry Col. He was a lucky dog to be so loved.
  13. All boats involve compromise...even the "best" ones.
  14. Ocean Maid was a rather nice 60' ex fishing boat. Rather nice until her new owners left the genny running while they went shopping. Afterwards she was not so very nice. She wasn't insured either.
  15. RIP Minty. A beautiful little dog.
  16. My Dearly Beloved has severe hearing loss and tinnitus and very often does not hear the ting of a cyclists bell. This has resulted in him being sworn at on several occasions.
  17. That's good to hear. We came down the flight for the first time on wednesday. All was well until lock eleven when we discovered that the pound between locks twelve and thirteen was dry. We were the first boat of the day.
  18. There is a narrow boat and a wide beam in the marina at Southdown (across the water from Plymouth). I don't think either of them has ever been out of the marina though.
  19. No idea but we are heading that way so will soon find out. Our last experience of that stretch was twenty years ago in a 54'x10' wide beam. It was an interesting trip to say the least. I'm hoping that a 60' narrow boat will have fewer problems with the depth but have no silly illusions that the weed problem will have improved. Fortunately for me weed declogging is very much a Blue Job...along with cassette emptying!
  20. I am so sorry about this outcome. We lost our beautiful English Bull Terrier twenty years ago in similar circumstances The very first time she was without it she fell into the water and sunk like a stone. It's heartbreaking. Without her lifejacket is what I meant to say.
  21. We were approaching a lock on the S Oxford yesterday. The locked boat came out and we pulled forward to enter the empty lock. We were less than a minute away when a man looked over the bridge and then closed the gates and proceeded to fill the lock so that he could get his boat in. Prat!
