  1. What you may find is that unless you are on campsites you will find it difficult to find anywhere to empty your cassette unless you are prepared to dig a hole to empty it in . Wild camping sounds ideal but what many of the van lifers do is pee in a bottle and tip it in the hedge and poo in bin liners and put that in rubbish bins. . For weekends away you will be able to empty your cassette when you get home , for longer trips maybe a camp site every other day or so . If you travel across the channel then facilities are more readily available . Have you negotiated a good deal on that Benimar Mileo 202 in stock just down the road from you ? Looks a lovely spec on that van and automatic too which makes a huge difference.
  2. In the 60s / 70s BMC / British Leyland included remove heater plugs and clean orifices in the 12,000 mile service for 1.5 diesel engine vehicles. . I wonder how many boat owners with BMC engines actually carry out that task today . A 11/64 drill bit is a must have for 1.5 diesel owners that want a clean orifice for their heater plugs.

  4. This is obviously the most cost effective route to take with no need to slip the boat again.
  5. I own an over 30 year old boat and my insurers required a full out of water survey last year before they would offer fully comp insurance . On contacting a surveyor there appears to be three levels of survey namely hull only, insurance company survey and then full survey. The insurers actually used the term full survey in correspondence but were happy for what my surveyor calls an insurance survey . I think a full survey would be the type a potential purchaser would require but the insurance survey was certainly comprehensive . I tried to find an insurer that didn't require a survey as I had heard Saga didn't require one , that was untrue and I failed miserably so had to stump up for the insurance survey . I wish you well in your search ,but in may be worth clarifying that when an insurer states they require a full out of water survey they will be satisfied with an insurance survey which is slightly cheaper .
  6. The article seems to suggest they did most of the work themselves . Time for you to get your sander out and paint brushes !!!
  7. MGB Hive have the tensioner listed for sale £6-50p .Seems cheap enough .
  8. Nice to see a 15 year old thread brought back to life.
  9. And if you get bored and there is nothing much on the telly you can always give your bucket of shit a stir .
  10. Excellent ,have you got space for Dr Bobs crap too ?
  11. I've now watched the Foxes Afloat video where they report on the Compooster toilet . I wish Dr Bob well with his shit stirring and piss taking in the 5 litre container and look forward to updates .
  12. The similarity with dog poo is that responsible dog owners when their dog shits they bag it up and put it ideally in a bin specially provided for dog poo or alternatively in any rubbish bin provided . I suspect you are going to do the same thing albeit on a larger scale with your bag containing your few days worth of shit . Like dogs I suspect your piss will be poured onto grass /in the hedge row again in a much larger amount. I have no problem with this but please do not call it composting , it is certainly not composting or compoosting and has more in common with the bucket and chuck it tradition. My concern is that when it becomes common knowledge that boaters are dumping bags of shit in bins not intended for human waste then boaters may become unwelcome visitors . The answer maybe is again drawing canine comparison for special bins to be provided alongside the canal for boaters to put their bags of shit in and provided they empty the shit out of the plastic bags over time it just might turn into compost .
  13. I wonder how many compost toilet owners actually compost their waste ? I know Peterboat does but from the various boating and van life vlogs many seem to just bag the poo up and put it in rubbish bins much like dog owners do . [ apart from those who hang it in bushes]. Everyone likes a good toilet thread with the more detail the better it seems so this looks like a good start to 2021.

    Full service bmc

I have a British Leyland Service Book that states that for a road vehicle fitted with the 1.5 diesel engine the fuel injection pump driving gear lubricator and lubricator filter should be cleaned every 6,000 miles or 6 monthly intervals. In 1971 the British Leyland recommended charge for a 6,000 mile service on a diesel Austin A60 / Morris Oxford was £6-64p . The 12,000 mile service was £10-65p .
  17. Unless I've missed something is the only way to get hot water by using the immersion heater ? That would be fine in a marina but not suitable for cruising . I have no experience of using a generator to heat water but I would have thought it totally impractical and very costly . I wouldn't pay that money for it .
  18. Install spiders in the wing mirrors is also on the check list before handing over a new car .I think they also check they are there on every service .
  19. That would certainly have stirred any crap up in the fuel tank.
  20. If it were my boat I would give it a coating of Vactan first before applying bitumen .
  21. Blimey, not exactly a bundle of fun is he. I won't be watching any of his vlogs .
  22. There seems to be a huge increase in Youtube videos by people new to boating . Stumbled across one by a young couple Gareth and Nicole who have started a You tube channel called Life on Rosebud. They have decided to move in together on a 35 ft narrowboat named Rosebud that they are buying from Whilton Marina . The survey turned up a few issues that Whilton have agreed to fix and the boat should be ready for collection by the middle of October . I wish them well but wonder if rose tinted glasses weren't involved somewhere as they speak of watching Youtube videos and fancying canal living themselves. The joys of youth.
