  1. Had the problem of the broken riser wires at diglis lock on the Severn a few years ago when we were going up....the lockie wasn't impressed when I ended up in the middle of the lock but didn't seem to quite get that it's hard to have a rope round something that's not attached. I'd asked him to take a rope up but he refused. Words were exchanged!!! I did notice they were fixed when we last went through.
  2. Just seen this. https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notice/10483/bridge-154-cropredy-mill-bridge-oxford-canal closed due to a boat hitting the bridge (!!??) Thats going to cause some queues!! Hope it's a quick fix.
  3. I'll be interested in the reply too! I can't even find the 400009 filters on the General Ecology US website now... do keep us posted.

  5. I'd recommend "just beer" micropub and "the flying circus" for pubs....both near the river. There's also a bottle shop that I can't remember the name of. Good luck with a mooring on the Cart pontoon....think most of the boats are welded to it despite it being a 48hr mooring right next to the CRT office. i think all the other moorings involve a lift off a typical narrowboat. You might get a temporary (paid for) mooring in the marina
  6. Sadly that link doesn't work for me...poss because I'm not a "friend" of the person concerned.
  7. It says they were rescued in the report after another boat came along and found them and then phoned Hawne Basin who sent a boat in to help them...
  8. Just seen this on fb. Does anyone know more about it?? I'm surprised if it's as reported it hasn't had more "airtime".....although some of the other articles by The floater" are a little..... shall we say....sensational "Stuck in a tunnel - for nearly a day A 20-hour nightmare jammed in a low tunnel was the start of the cruising season for a boat leaving Hawne Basin on the Birmingham Canal Navigations, as Peter Underwood reports. While making their way towards Netherton, and just after entering Gosty Tunnel the boaters found their boat, suddenly and without warning, stopped dead when it became jammed solid by a large log against the tunnel wall. Although only 500 yards long Gosty Tunnel is notoriously narrow, and shallow with a very low roof in places and travel through it is painfully slow at the best of times. http://www.thefloater.org/the-floater-april-2017/stuck-in-a-tunnel-for-nearly-a-day"
  9. I would phone the Wigan office tho. They might be able to put your name on a reserve list
  10. Surely if it fits through a lock it's suitable for the navigation....I thought everyone knew that....... always amusing when they meet themselves coming the other way....
  11. You do book online and you should be able to see the available dates....might still be worth a call and seeing if they have cancellations etc I guess. I've found the Wigan office...if not the management....very helpful in the past.
  12. I'm afraid I didn't pull over when I met it...I did give them just enough room...but only just....they didn't look too happy about it but as you say it's totally unsuited to the waterway.
  13. Apparently it also allows the boat to moor on lock bollards as well.
  14. What's wrong with having a RBOA sticker in the window?? Much more sensible than an IWA one or heaven forbid a NTBA one.....come to think about it you don't see many ACC ones these days........
  15. Blimey your wife is controlled....if that had been my OH he would have to be worried about his bodily parts all over his paintwork....
  16. Probably Kensal Green as the visitor moorings seem to be full of wide beams that are welded to the bank....
  17. Indeed! I'd literally not finished tying the ropes up before the mooring warden at Windsor relived me of £8!
  18. Most of the towpath & park Abington moorings below the lock seem to be owned by the council and are free for 5 days. We were quite impressed.
  19. My point is there is quite a bit of the GU where physically they just couldn't pass each other....and if you think I'm going through the bushes or up on the mud cos your boat isn't suitable for the waterway then maybe I do think I have a right to the channel
  20. At least they are the correct craft for the waterway....it seems that just because they fit it a lock then it's assumed they are ok to use...I really hope CRT start charging them double plus some quite soon...
  21. Honestly that's less than helpful...... To the OP.... was the tank full when it stuck? If so it's probably a stuck float on the sender or similar which may need the sender removing from the tank...if the tank was empty then it could be an electrical short between sender & gauge. I'd check at the gauge that the terminals are in good order...sometimes damp can be an issue.
  22. I want to know what happens when they meet themselves coming the other way on some parts of the GU as they seem to think they have a god given right to hog the cut!
  23. The bit in all the guides which says you are advised to stop/wind here. I know technically you can go further but not only wasn't I that brave I also beached on a sandbank. Maybe I was unlucky but I certainly wasn't going any further!
  24. Indeed we can all make mistakes but an apology costs nothing. I once had a Canal Time shoot out of Sawley marina about 10ft in front of my bows when under instruction....luckily I managed to stop before t boning them....perhaps I shouldn't have bothered... I'm afraid when the chap jumped off he got told a few home truths in no uncertain terms...if that's how hirers are instructed then how are they expected to know what's right?
  25. Yes it's worth the trip but I'd wind just before the official end of navigation for powered craft...i.e. Before the bridge by the round house....it's a tad silted up after it.....that's an hour of my life that could have been better spent!
