  1. Pumpouts. The best £16 a month I could spend. ?
  2. About as much use to the OP as the cotents of your cassette. To the OP. By the time I read your post several useful posts have been made. Whilst I'm surprised you hadn't sussed the issue out earlier I wish you good luck.. It's not that difficult once you address the matter in a calm, reasoned manner. Much easier than coming close up with yesterdays dinner as some seem to enjoy
  3. I would ask if you have ever owned a NB. If you had I doubt you would ask the question. On another topic I said that my NB costs me around 8K a year to own, not own and use. I stand by that estimate which doesn't include capital investment, depreciation, turnaround costs, 99% of the servicing/maintenance labour costs etc, etc. Also the hire season is not that long. Look at any hire fleet base outside school holidays. Like as not you'll see wall to wall boats.
  4. -And I thought I was doing well with 6 (all working ) multimeters
  5. My first Gulpèr failed about a year ago. As I was out cruising I had to replace it in a hurry. It ran out of suck! I only got around to looking at the original one on Saturday as I need a standby bilge pump for a couple of weeks (sad, unrelated tale) Turned out to be the joker valve in the outflow fitting. It had lost it's flexibility and wasn't closing properly. Of course you can't buy the vàlve on it's own , you have to buy the overhaul kit at £19. At least I now know the knack of reassembling the diaphram casing . ?
  6. Pre finished. I have the same product in my home. The only place it's showing any sign of wear is just in front of the chair I always sit in.
  7. To be honest I don't think it was . I didn't include either diesel or gas. Equally apart from the stern gear none of mty costs in recent years have come as any great surprise. What about the things you buy without thinking? Paint, ropes, replacement fenders, batteries, nuts, bolts ,screws. Few of those things cost much but add them up and they may well amount to a significant amount. I love my boat but ' it 'ain't cheap ? Was it? If so sorry for going off on a tangent
  8. Sorry, if I didn't make it clear the 8K per year was overall running costs including moorings etc but excluding cruising costs.
  9. When I was fitting out my boat I used 18mm exterior ply on 2"x 3" timber bolted to the frames. Couple of years down the line it started to float in one 2' x 3' area. Being ABSOLUTLY sure that I knew where the frames were I used a couple of self tapping bolts to screw it down. Worked fine. I later laid 18mm solid oak flooring over the top. Best thing I ever did. better part of 20 years later it's still sound. Even the 'varnish' is still good with only a couple of places showing wear. It's suffered the inevitable plumbing leaks and one major canal water flood with no adverse affects.
  10. You are joking. Ignore my post I pushed the wrong button. I started to reply seriously but something went wrong. If I look at the costs over the last 4 years it's nearer £8000 per year! As an indication, NOT TYPICAL BUT FACTUAL. This week, yes week, major problem with stern gear that will cost circa £400 parts, plus labour, not a DIY job say £200. plus slipping, say £400 plus odds and sods so if I see change out of 1 K I'll be lucky. Oh, as an other indication of costs, earlier today issue with Whale Gulper, the joker valve, not available as an individual item only in overhaul kit. £18.87. Since getting the boat 23 years ago I can count on one hand how many times I've paid for someone to work on it. Indeed I fitted it out completely from a bare shell. Sorry if I seem to be ranting but people who think owning a boat is cheap are living in cloud cuckoo land
  11. Strangely I've been thinking about the running costs of running my 23 year old 55' NB only today. (NOT thinking about getting rid of it). The following may not be a direct comparison with your situation , it reflects the real costs of running a boat. Moorings. Non residential out of London. £3250 exc electricity Licence.
  12. Keep it, it was your Dad's
  13. Some years ago friends had their yacht moored in South Dock when a large holdall floated by close to them. Margaret tried unsuccessfully to snag it with a boathook. Several days later another moorer was more successful. It turned out to contain a a headless body.
  14. You forgot to mention the padded jackets, saris' and various other articles of clothing (around the prop) Even I forgot to mention the bread thrown over the wall as you pass.?
  15. Prehaps you are the onewho has not read or comprehended properly. I never mentioned mentioned using or covering with oil a mats w & d. In fact to the best of my knowledge I do't have a boating friend who has a w & d. They all borrow mine. End of debate
  16. Actually Tony this is one instance where you don' t know what you're talking about. You have never seen my engine compartment ,nor are you ever likely to. My engine compartment is clean and oil free .I use oil absorbent sheets, which for your information are available on e bay for £9.99 for 20. If you can use a w & d on an engine compartment over an extended period of time without getting some oil on it you're a genius. Yes, you have annoyed me. As it happens the last time I had a BSS the examiner commented on how clean the engine compartment was. I didn't get £50 knocked off.
  17. According to my old Nicholsons for the South Oxford all winding holes identified are suitable for full length boats unless otherwise noted when the maximum length will be noted. Marsden Doles is shown as being 50' max . I have turned my 55 footer there JUST
  18. Used use The Weather Channel but since a recent update no longer find ot user friendly. Presently using the BBC app. Seconds ago @ 10.34 it was showing sunny @ 11.00 and part sunny @ 12.00. It's been brilliant sunshine so far today but clould is beginning to build up . On balance pretty accurate. I to want to do some painting but given that I can't even touch the roof or side I'm goung cruising?
  19. I know where you mean. I think there's a damned big magnet buried in the bank.?
  20. Don't seem able to edit previous post. Þhe tape is Sylglass and see post 51. Exactly the same as my suggestion. Sorry about spelling etc, on phone
  21. Two suggestions 1) run WITHOUT apressure cap. I know it's a totally differeñt engine but my trusty BMC 1 .8 will run withot a cap from now to doomsday. Just keep an eye on the temp & oil pressure. 2) That tape used to seal seal greenhouse windows. It was mentioned in an earlier post, Sil.?....something? It really sticks like ...... to an army blanket. I seales a rotten window frame in my shed 2 years ago and it's still watertight and sou d.
  22. As do I. Picking my way through a rocky approach to a now forgotten port in the general area of Brest. Happy days!
  23. I've got one of those(badged Pela) and I stand by my vote for a wet and dry.
  24. When you say 'up' I assume you mean from Napton. If so it's the most boring stretch there is. That b...d. farm never goes. First it's to one side of you then it's to the other. Even in my clonecraft I'm plowing not boating. I've got to do it in a week or so and i gurantee it will be cold, wet and windy.
