  36. All prices are always "high". If boat prices doubled people would say they are high. If they halved people would still say they are too high. In addition they would say thay are falling because they are still too high, wait until they have fallen some more. I can't ever remember a thread on here discussing how low boat prices were. Even when they were really low. Same applies to houses.

  48. That's interesting, I still can't help think that even with a properly installed on board It the screen should be connected to the shore earth. It seems to me that a primary to screen fault relies on the shore rcd triping when someone bridges boat to shore and that's fine I suppose. However adding unlikely occurrence to the already unlikely, if someone is in the water and touches the live hull they could receive a dangerous shock, potentially leading to drowning. I think its largely academic/theoretical but I can't see an obvious fault mode where screen to boat earth is preferable to screen to shore. I think the most likely fault is, as you said earlier, insulation breakdown possibly due to overloading/overheating and I can't see it matters much where the screen is connected so long as the appropriate breaker trips.

  49. Fully agree. CRT sell "proper" ones for £5 and £7 each last time I checked. Do not buy the knock-off eBay ones - the aluminium handcuff keys are slightly the wrong size, and the unofficial Watermate Yale keys don't have the correct number of slots, so they usually work on worn, tired lock mechanisms but don't work on brand new ones. We once nearly hung a boat in a lock because MrsBiscuits' handcuff key wouldn't turn the spindle to let her operate the lock. That one went in the bin, and was replaced with an official CRT one an hour later. We discovered the issue with eBay Yale keys when they replaced a tired lock on the Elsan point at one of the services. That key would open the toilet and the shower but not the Elsan, which was the only thing we actually needed to use. That's gone in the emergency spare drawer, on the thinking there's a 50:50 chance it will work if we both lose our official ones. Don't mess about for £12 a set, and get one per person and a spare set of both.

  50. Hi all, some people may remember me as fender Phil, I worked the canals and at Tradline in Braunston, I retired from making fenders a few years ago due to health reasons and have now gone back to my original trade as an engraver, among other things I engrave safety signs and labels for marine & industrial use, I just thought I would share my ebay shop with the forum (I hope this is ok?) I can engrave Stainless steel, Aluminium, Brass, and laminates, I make custom hull plates too and can engrave pretty much anything My E-Bay Shop: https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/safety1st
